Kris Kobach, Kansas, needs to apologize! - equating gay families with drug abusers and polygamists.

Petition from Carol Thonen, http://signon.org (MoveOn.org)

"Kris Kobach, Kansas' Secretary of State, needs to apologize for his comments at the Republican National Convention equating gay families with drug abusers and polygamists.

That's why I signed a petition to Kris Kobach, Secretary of State, The Kansas State House, The Kansas State Senate, Governor Sam Brownback, The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama, which says:

"Kris Kobach needs to apologize for his comments at the Republican National Convention equating gay families with drug abusers and polygamists. As Americans everyone should have equal rights under the law. We have a duty to stand up against bigotry, hate, and anyone promoting divisiveness in our country."

Will you sign this petition? Click here:"

(and that was before his daughter's mother passed away).

He's been divorced for several years, raising his daughter.

(Oh, and no, he "didn't do that" ... he's enlisted our mother to help raise his daughter ... so much for "I did it myself" ...)

This is another example of people taking an example and calling it "equating".

Here's what Kobach said, courtesy of Rev. Al

~comparing~ not ~equating~.

-------

comparing
present participle of com·pare (Verb)
Verb:

1. Estimate, measure, or note the similarity or dissimilarity between.
2. Point out the resemblances to; liken to.

------

equating
present participle of e·quate (Verb)
Verb:

1. Consider (one thing) to be the same as or equivalent to another: "customers equate their name with quality".
2. (of one thing) Be the same as or equivalent to (another).

From your link:

“Kris Kobach from Kansas. I think the wording... I oppose this amendment, I think the wording is too broad. Especially the last sentence: ‘As long as there are no infringements on the rights of others, It is not the role of government to judge.’ Well, our government routinely judges situations where you might regard people completely affecting themselves like, for example, the use of controlled substances, like, for example, polygamy that is voluntarily entered into. We condemn those activities even though they’re not hurting other people, at least directly.” (emphasis, er, like, added)

<snip to a very informative paragraph>

Kobach, no doubt, is against same-sex marriage. However, to state that he "likens same-sex unions to drug abuse," or, that, "Kobach equated same-sex relationships with drug abuse and polygamy," at best is disingenuous and the result of poor research and reporting. Journal-World readers deserve better than rehashed disinformation from left-wing political blogs rewritten as news. Journal-World readers deserve higher journalistic standards than to use an Obama donation website as the sole reference for news. An Obama donation website? Yes, here is a screenshot of the current home page of the ThinkProgress.com website

Yes, to state that he "likens" when all he said was "like" and "like" and especially to quote "rehashed disinformation" from "left-wing political blogs rewritten as news" and gee, I just go all warm and fuzzy for the "truth" about the "misunderstanding" you brought here.

That site made my head spin. "He didn't say what you thought he said when he said exactly what you said he said." Ow.
