https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/11/politics/schumer-coronavirus-emergency-declaration/index.htmlWashington (CNN)Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other senators are preparing a letter that will ask President Donald Trump to issue an emergency declaration for the coronavirus pandemic.
An aide for Schumer told CNN Wednesday that the minority leader, along with Democratic Sens. Patty Murray of Washington and Gary Peters of Michigan, will call for the formal declaration, which would allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency to use more than $40 billion from the Disaster Relief Fund to assist local state government in their response to the coronavirus.
In an effort to get congressional Republicans to act on the issue, Murray went to the Senate floor on Wednesday to try to pass by unanimous consent a bill that would "allow Americans to earn paid sick leave time so they can address their own health needs and the health needs of their families." But one Republican senator -- Lamar Alexander of Tennessee -- objected to the bill, causing it to fail.

(5,066 posts)national emergency for coronavirus because, given the extraordinary powers granted the president in a declared emergency, there is no doubt that he will abuse those powers.

Yes, State n Local could use the money/resources. But can we put language in the bill that says President Trump doesnt get any additional power to do anything except go play golf, and that puts Barack Obama in charge of the response?
Like, we need to tread carefully; if he can, trump WILL find a way to cancel elections...let's not give him the power to do that maybe???

(11,495 posts)trump will abuse this, but I do think Pelosi and Schumer will make sure the bill will not allow him to do that. We really need to get money out to the states that need it as soon as possible.

(10,270 posts)If that's the case, what makes you think Senate Republicans will pass it?

(11,495 posts)they need to do something because this whole mess is on them right now, or at least on trump. If a decent bill were passed to help with the virus, NOT voting for it would be bad in an election year. I really think Pelosi would have this covered.
