‘He’s gonna get us all killed’: sense of unease after Trump coronavirus speech

The president began his speech as many leaders do, then reverted to his familiar nationalism and threw in a bit of campaigning

Donald Trump’s first Oval Office address – that almost sacred altar for US presidents on prime time television – came in January 2019 amid a partial government shutdown and asserted that only a border wall can keep out dangerous illegal immigrants.

His second such address on Wednesday night was again couched in terms around the need to resist a foreign invasion that is someone else’s fault. The problem is that the coronavirus is already inside America and spreading.

And the message was delivered by a 73-year-old man with a sniffing habit who did not seem to be a glowing picture of health nor entirely at ease reading from a TelePrompter. His bold assertion last week – “I like this stuff. I really get it … Maybe I have a natural ability.” – seemed even more incredible than before.

Many observers found the address unreassuring and downright weird. Susan Glasser, a staff writer from the New Yorker, tweeted: “The militaristic, nationalistic language of Trump’s speech tonight is striking: a ‘foreign virus,’ keeping out China and Europe.”

David Litt, who wrote speeches for Obama, posted: “As a former presidential speechwriter, my careful rhetorical analysis is that he’s gonna get us all killed.”

"He's going to kill us all!" So it has sunk in. I'm at the marinated stage.

I'm just glad I shopped two weeks sgo. We haven't been off our property in a week. I hope that was enough. But the deep freeze and pantry are full. Now we wait and what? Eat, pray and love, I guess. Two old farts still crazy after all these years.

Be well, please, dear Skittles.

We stocked up also, and everyone in our Republican Neighborhood was laughing their asses off at us.

We just smiled.................

It started hitting the fan tonight, but by tomorrow and the next few days it is really coming home to all those watching Fox News and Rush Limpdick that those two have conned them like none before. "In a week this will be gone, time will prove this is a giant hoax by the Democrats to upset the election, go to work, no worse than a common cold....etc etc etc

This is not at all like I imagined I would spend the remaining years on earth......

Banning Europeans while the virus is spreading here is pure stupidity.

No testing being done here as it spreads.

It's up to governors because Trump is effing clueless.

People will die because of the whackjob in the white house reading Steven Miller's speeches. Waiting for Jarrod to decide what to do.

Trump looks like he is sick by the way.

We were supposed to be relieved and even grateful that Trump didn't screw up completely? Is that where we're at? I'm not buying into any new normal. Trump has no path beyond his resigning.

Within an hour after his speech, the Dow Jones Future market took a sudden 1100 point drop.

Maybe the Rah-Rah Republican Fascist loving Corporations suddenly realized that THIS time, we all aren't going to be the only ones getting fucked up the old wazoo........

Many of the billionaires are becoming millionaires. Jumping out of Wall Street May become a thing again.

Remember the old adage we are one or two paychecks from becoming homeless?

If you have $100 million and you lose, 20, 25, 30 percent, you’re still fabulously wealthy and won’t suffer. If you have $1000 and lose that much, you’re making some tough choices.
