This is scary. My workplace(a sprts bar) just decided they would start doing some new precautionary procedures. The servers are to wear gloves when taking money and they are to sanitize the booths and chairs wvery 20 minutes. The cooks/prep/ect are to wash thier hands every 20 minutes. There is talk that we may switch to to go orders only.
Here is the scary part. If any worker shows symptoms we are to be sent home immediately and cannot come back until we have been tested. We must bring back a doctors note proving to not be infected. We can get fired if we have covid19 or if we dont get a doctors note.
The only place that supposedly has tests is about an hour drive away. It wont be free and it wont be paid for by the company. I cant afford to get one even if I did catch it. I would be out of the job.
If we can, we need to do something fast. Healthcare for all is a step! That wont be fast enough though. Ill take my freedom dividend though. That way I can pay my rent if I loose my job. Wish me and my co-workers luck!

(9,952 posts)The concert was canceled. Everyone canceled. I am just not comfortable being smack in the middle of all that bodily fluid flying around so I was relieved. It is going to hurt a lot of us in the service industry. I am willing to allow my bosses to take me off payroll for a month or more as long as job is guaranteed, and my hours when I return so they can run a skeleton crew. I am all for helping the business, and I prefer to not be in the middle until we see what is happening.
I wish you the best with this too. We need these strong rules right now, and if we can get a handle on it, maybe it will not last that long.

(51,649 posts)to the GOP. I have been hearing mixed messages about how the deal is going. Nancy's presser this morning emphasized taking care of the needs of families and "Tests, Tests, Tests" she repeated several times. Also, she is taking it one step at a time and it defiantly seemed like she had a realistic approach.

(9,313 posts)At least, here in WA, testing is getting off the ground. The UW has capacity to process 1500 per day. They have a drive thru site. Gates foundation is working to launch free home testing for people in Seattle.
If you become ill tomorrow, I think there is a shot that some sort of testing will be avaialble to you two weeks from now.
If you become ill, the first order of business is to isolate/quarantine. The second is to get better. Time may take care of the testing issue. You can't count on it, but set it aside, and just focus on staying isolated and getting well.

(100,129 posts)There's talk that Trump might enact a travel ban to California. How the fuck am I supposed to get home if that happens?
Trump needs to be punched in the face right now.

Findings mean that isolating people once they start to feel ill is less effective than hoped
Read it here: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/mar/12/coronavirus-most-infections-spread-by-people-yet-to-show-symptoms-scientists
(snips)
An analysis of infections in Singapore and Tianjin in China revealed that two-thirds and three-quarters of people respectively appear to have caught it from others who were incubating the virus but still symptom-free.
The finding has dismayed infectious disease researchers as it means that isolating people once they start to feel ill will be far less effective at slowing the pandemic than had been hoped.
--------
The finding confirms recent comments from Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the World Health Organizations emerging diseases and zoonoses unit, who said preliminary data showed patients shed more virus in the early stages of the disease, including when presymptomatic. A separate study that tracked nine patients in Germany found that levels of the virus might already be in decline when symptoms come on.
--------
Rowland Kao, who studies infectious disease dynamics at the University of Edinburgh, said: One of the factors that has distinguished this coronavirus pandemic from the Sars epidemic in 2003, is that Sars was infectious only after the development of clinical signs, which made it relatively easier to control. For the current pandemic, from very early on it was suspected that a substantial number of transmissions were arising before clinical signs appeared.
Although the internet is awash with false and misleading info right now, there's a number of professional, authoritative sites that describe how this thing spreads, that detail virus residence time on surfaces and the best techniques for prevention and cleanup.
In your case, it's ironic that ethanol (high-power booze, otherwise known as PGA) is the go-to killer of this virus (and other corona viruses) according to WHO and other top-line sources.
I only regret that all Americans are not in the know like members of DU are today.
Best of luck and work safe!........
