President Trump holds strong leads over both former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in potential head-to-head matchups in Iowa, according to a Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll released Thursday.
Trump leads Biden among likely voters by a 51 percent to 41 percent margin, with 8 percent of voters saying they are undecided in the hypothetical matchup.
Trump gets the support of 53 percent of likely voters in a matchup with Sanders, who gets 41 percent support. Six percent of voters are undecided in a Trump-Sanders head-to-head.
The president is buoyed by a net-positive approval rating 50 percent of Iowans approve of the job hes doing, while 47 percent disapprove. Thursdays poll marks the first time in which Trumps approval rating has broken even in the survey.
That is a high-water mark in the Iowa Poll, said J. Ann Selzer of Selzer & Co., which conducted the survey...........................

(16,685 posts)Than admit they were wrong. The worse it gets because of him the tighter they will cling to him. And by MAGA cultists i mean all Republicans and right leaners. What in the past 4 years has shown us any different? The only reason we've been winning elections is because we've been turning out everyone else.

(33,339 posts)I live in a red county that went almost 80% trump. All the GOPers are talking about coronavirus and failed impeachment in the same breath. It's not hard to figure out where they get this insane linkage.

(17,862 posts)I thought we were changing with getting two new Democratic representatives, but I guess I was wrong. The farmer bail out money and expanded ethanol are big drivers in the state.

(57,080 posts)POTUS is not the only office up for grabs. State legislatures seats are as important to us this year especially if we are going to fix and end GOP gerrymandering. We're getting the White House. We need to fight for every single office down to dog catcher, too.

(8,419 posts)Sorry, but any red state shouldn't have such impact on our candidate.
Nothing against the Dems in Iowa, but why should so much focus be put on a state that is red and lacks diversity.

(14,565 posts)I took note of that once I began following political math in 1992. Iowa never had anywhere near the normal number of self-identified liberals given the reputation of the state or the way the state voted. It was always in the 19-21% range of liberals compared to 36-37% self-identified conservatives.
By all logic, that is a red state. The national gap used to be 12% more conservatives than liberals, but now it is down to 9%. Iowa still has the 17% gap but conservatives are up to 40% with liberals slightly up to 23%. The difference is we used to get a bizarre favorable split of self-identified moderates, in the 63-36 range. That is incredible and not sustainable. Beginning in 2016 the moderate split was a more logical 51-47.
Any state with 40% conservatives is not worth pursuing if it is trending in the wrong direction and the demographics are not favorable. The Iowa electorate is 90% whites. Those whites have shifted more conservative. There is no meaningful demographic to shift it back in our direction.
We can waste time in Iowa or we can emphasize a state like Arizona which is also 40% conservatives but all the demographic trends are in our favor.

(13,975 posts)it was a Democratic primary, not a general election where Repubs can vote. Iowa Dems are pretty liberal in my experience.

(13,975 posts)I dont think the Biden campaign should waste much time their. Or Ohio for that matter. Focus on the traditional three swing states as well as Florida, Arizona and maybe Georgia and North Carolina.

(14,565 posts)Ohio is no chance and Iowa is no chance.
Arizona is in play, along with Florida then North Carolina. I am not optimistic about Georgia or Texas.
Texas will come later once the Hispanic population is better represented and participating, the second generation types.
There's always too much negativity toward Florida in this site. That state is always close but we end up on the short end. No question Florida is greater opportunity than Texas or Georgia right now but I'm sure Georgia and Texas will receive more hype here. Biden can win more of the 45+ block in Florida, partially because Trump's older supporters from 2016 have partially died out. The 65+ group is now including as many Baby Boomers as Silent Generation, which was always the most conservative generation.
Turin_C3PO
(13,975 posts)I agree that we should definitely focus on Florida. Demographically, Im excited for the future because it appears that Millennials who are approaching their forties are just as liberal as they were when they were twenty. As that population starts voting in greater numbers and the Silent Generation dies off, I think well see the Republicans power wane significantly.

(10,053 posts)But if we win at least one of those purplish states like Florida (29 electoral votes) or Texas (38 electoral votes) we can overcome that loss of 6 in Iowa.

(33,575 posts)But who gives a fuck about Iowa?
Let's keep our eye on MI, WI, PA and FL.
VA, NC, and AZ to.
It's only 6 fucking electoral votes.
