Cruise passengers under coronavirus quarantine say they lack food, basic medical attention

Cruise passengers under coronavirus quarantine say they lack food, basic medical attention
Letitia Stein
USA TODAY

Cruise ship passengers under federal coronavirus quarantine say they are lacking food, medical attention and are being housed in unsanitary conditions, contradicting Trump's claims that getting them off the Grand Princess was a "tremendous success."

Michelle Saunders and her 83-year-old grandmother, both from Illinois, have been waiting for medical attention and other basics since they were among the 2,000 evacuated from the ship.

At Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Georgia no one came by to check their temperature for nearly two days, Saunders told USA TODAY on Saturday – a standard protocol they were promised to help monitor for infection.

Food was not delivered to their room for more than 12 hours after their arrival, she said. Their room had no towel and one small bar of soap, and she has been told there is no more, despite the constant public health reminders to wash hands.

No efforts are being made to keep the former cruise ship passengers at a safe social distance from each other to avoid spreading the contagious disease either, she said, beyond telling them to wear masks when they leave their rooms.

these days have options for ordering delivery of basic goods.

These are people at the mercy of their keepers, and their keepers aren't doing the job. That has to make an already scary situation much worse.

Have you tried Instacart? It is amazingly efficient and easy to use. Like Amazon, they are getting slammed too, but it's worth a try. Good luck, and here's hoping all the panic buying will ease up soon.

There is not a squadron that’s job is to do this so they are going to try to make it work and this is the outcome.

It’s part of the U.S. system of elder care.

You can lock them in a nursing home, where, for $6500 a month, they get TV and three meals a day. Or for about half that, you can book a month long cruise on a ship, get unlimited food, get to interact with others, your own cabin, and an aventurine to a different spot each day.

Hundreds of thousands of seniors book cruises because it’s cheaper than a nursing home.

Leave San Diego, travel to Hawaii, Tahiti, Bora Bora and more- a complete 30 day cruise from $3,025. Other 30cruises from $2395.

Hell of a lot cheap, and a lot more fun, than a month locked in a nursing home.

and the rest were saying? It was clear to a lot of us going on a cruise wouldn't be a good idea by then. But what about people that have money out and are trying to talk themselves into going? If they watch FOX "News" and trust Trump, he screwed them. In a way you can't say they don't have it coming to them, but very irresponsible of the administration, Hannity and the rest.

quarantined in their homes. I guess it's logistically too difficult to deliver these people to their homes in other states. I am kind of pissed at the moment because these cruises are spreading it around, including to my county.

He sets directives, and lets them dangle in the wind.

There's no accountability or responsibility in the Trump admin, from the head on down. His sole talent is artificially pumping up his value while attacking others. Is it any surprise that his entire admin works without the slightest hint of accountability anywhere?
