... to get sick to develop "herd immunity."
It is a much less disruptive approach BJ has going there.
Don't have to spend all that money testing.
No real need to close things. Everyone will get sick anyway -- and we actually want them to.
Don't isolate for 2 weeks if you are ill. One week is enough.
Quit testing anybody, except the most seriously ill with highest likelihood of death. (They need to know how many die of this thing to "extrapolate back" to figure out infection rates, since they aren't testing to get that data).
DT would love this "solution."
Maybe border closings don't work, but if I were the EU, I'd put a ban on UK citizen travel to anywhere in the EU. Let them develop their "herd immunity" in isolation.

(18,672 posts)He's proposing we kill over 6 million Americans alone. My god, Trump very well may surpass Hitler if this is indicative of how they really think.

(18,672 posts)We won't reach even close to 70% before we run out of hospital beds and health care workers. While conservatives are poo-pooing this as the "flu", they don't realize that we only have about 198,000 ventilators, most of which aren't full-featured and are normally only used for emergencies There are less than 300,000 available hospital beds at any given time in the US. They'd better hope they don't require hospitalization or have a surgery scheduled in a few weeks.
On edit: My math sucks, so I'll just say, this would be very bad.

(17,709 posts)The net effect is no different than what we have now. The critical time for action was spent in denial and worrying about "his" numbers. In events like this you get one chance to get it right. There is no hope left to "contain" the virus. It is everywhere. The government has failed to protect the people or to mitigate the consequences or that failure. The government was entirely unprepared for a crisis that was inevitable.
We shouldn't have expected sane leadership from an insane leader. Instead of listening to scientist, and the medical professionals, he went with his "hunch." He has surrounded himself with bootlickers who would not challenge his judgement. Every thinking man and woman in this country has known for years what a buffoon Trump is, and we did not do enough to rid ourselves when we had a chance. We all know that his is a liar, yet we still expect the truth from him. Trump's imbecilic policy to protect his image at the the cost of public health should have been predictable. We get the government we deserve. Make no mistake, it is our own damn fault.
As this disease passes over us, Trump will be bragging about how his brilliant efforts and leadership kept the death rate to only *, and how, because of his business acumen the economy will recover in * time.
Now it is time that we pay the piper. If you are old or ill, good damn luck.
