Expert's 'best single piece of advice' on coronavirus goes viral on Twitter

Last edited Sun Mar 15, 2020, 11:56 AM - Edit history (1)

It's only an 18-second video clip but it is being hailed on social media as the best advice you can have for avoiding spreading the coronavirus.

Graham Medley, Professor of Infectious Disease Modelling, told BBC Newsnight people shouldn't act like someone who is avoiding contracting the virus but rather as someone who already has the virus and is trying not to pass it onto others.

The advice, hailed as "probably the best single piece of advice I've heard about the #coronavirus" by a Twitter user, has been shared thousands of times in just a few hours.

"Most people have a fear of acquiring the virus. I think a good way of doing it is to imagine that you do have the virus, and change your behaviour so that you're not transmitting it," he said.

This is the most correct advice I've seen yet. Always think of others, especially the most vulnerable amongst us.

Graham Medley is a professor of infectious disease modelling at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

It's like a run away train with an idiot engineer and all the doors are welded shut. And WTF is with the USA hat, doesn't he know what country he's in. Test kits, WHO had them, other countries are using them ... but no, we had to go reinvent them again. FFS!!!

that the US lags behind every developed country in testing as we wait patiently for rich people to figure out how to get richer from it. Our innovative job creators will come up with a very quick and efficient solution to this problem that avoids long lines, empty store shelves, empty venues, and widespread panic from a populace that doesn't trust their own government officials.

America doesn't ration health care.

It will get people to spend more time than they otherwise might in making sure to observe proper cleanliness and to just plain go home and stay away from people as much as possible. Crisis can trigger selfish impulses in all of us; this way of approaching the problems pulls people out of their own heads and preoccupations and makes them consider others as well. That's a good thing. We need to know we are all in this together.

Do the OPPOSITE of the “role model” we have in trump. Whatever he’s doing and his behavior is playing out - DON’T DO THAT!

Just DON’T do it. Do the opposite. Believe the opposite of whatever he says.

“I don’t take any responsibility at all...”

“I don’t know anything about it...”

“It wasn’t us...”

“... it was an earlier administration...”

“... some other people - a group of people ...”

He’ll even pull out our favorite trump entity at my house: Lotta Peeple. Lotta Peeple is very prominent in Donald’s world. And Lotta Peeple has a LOT to say and many pronouncements to make, and definitely has trump’s ear.

“Lotta Peeple’re saying...”

He’s lived and profited, and wriggled and finagled his way away from blame and out of trouble with Lotta Peeple’s help - for years by now. Lotta Peeple’s been a reliable staple in his world - for a lot of years. Decades, even.

But nothing lasts forever. Not even donald and his favorite imaginary friend.

intrests ahead of their own, it should be noted that while this seems counter intuitive to them it is actually not. The best way to protect against getting the virus is to ACT as if you are trying not to infect others but in reality you are doing it for yourself not others. They are more likely to respond to that.

And no we did not stock up on TP and paper towels (we always have too much), and we made our own hand sanitizer with Rubbing alcohol and Aloe gel. And I ALWAYS have at least a month of dried beans, rice and pasta and other seeds and grains.

The only 'panic' buy we made was eight gallons of fruit juice that'll be opened if we get sick.

...To varying degrees, of course, but their attitude toward spreading disease in general is very different than in the West, and particularly The USA,.. where I saw a couple weeks a cashier in a restaurant sneeze into her HAND and then begin to hand the customer in front of me his change !!!!!!!!!!

I dropped a 20 on the counter and fled !!!!

there are ways to make homemade masks. Use N95 or higher hypoallergenic air filter material from a hardware store cut into pieces and put it inside something to hold it against your face. Ensure a tight fit with elastic or adjustable straps. I happened to have some extra N99 filters because I have chronic respiratory issues so I've given most of it away to elderly relatives who can sew masks for themselves.
