I love both coffee ice cream and chocolate and I still follow dad's instruction to this day. One medium size Cadbury with almonds lasts us a week. We treat it like others treat vitamins - one piece a day and or one scoop for ice cream and only at night.

My husband, father of my kids, who died a few decades ago, used to make a candy bar last for days. DAYS!!!!! I finally had to institute what we called "The 24 Hour Rule". If there's chocolate in the house for over 24 hours, it's fair game......because after 24 hours it's just cruel taunting to have uneaten chocolate around.

I didn't grow up that way. My mom was a child during the depression, and the deprivation she went through had life long effects. I was a skinny kid, but as an adult it was difficult to get past those bad habits that were instilled in us. She didn't just make a batch of cookies. She made a double batch. We always had desserts around the house, and there were no rules about how much we could have. Junk food, fried food, soft drinks.....no restraint.

As an young adult, I was always so busy that those bad habits didn't impact my weight. I also went through a period of time when I was very poor, and got to a very low weight. When I slowed my pace as I got older, it was a real struggle to start eating more sensibly. Now that I'm living alone, I hardly ever bake. If I decide to indulge in something sweet, I buy one serving. I rarely buy chips of any sort, or ice cream. For the most part, these days, I behave myself. I slip up once in awhile. It'll be a lot easier when spring gets here and I can work outside more.

Of course I ate all of my dark chocolate almond bar in less than 24 hours last week while spouse's bar is still hidden away.

I have ingredients for brownies and a chocolate chip cookie mix as something to look forward to. But I used to be tempted to scoop out and eat the chocolate chips from the dry cookie mix until the warnings came out about bacteria in raw flour and dough. As a child I would sneak into kitchen cupboard where the semi-sweet chocolate chips were stored and take handfuls to my room to eat while reading in bed.

32. I found my REAL family at last!
Sun Mar 15, 2020, 02:09 PM
Mar 2020

Chocolate addiction is my only drawback as a roommate. (I have actually listed that on roommate ads.)

Regular jokes/comments that I make:

"There is talk that the government is thinking of declaring chocolate a controlled substance. If that happens, they will discover that Prohibition was a cake walk."

"Normally, I am a very decent person. But where chocolate is concerned, I have no values, morals or scruples. If it's not protected by armed guards, any chocolate sitting about is fair game."

"Those packages of Hershey's Almond Bars that come six to the pack--there is a little flanged card on the bottom as part of the packaging. I tear off the little flanges and use the card to paint abstract art. So, you see, I'm really buying these candy bars for the art, it has nothing to do with the chocolate."

"Large packages of Peanut M&M's are listed as "sharing size" or "party size". Sharing my postal-code-sized ass--the only party that I having is a party for one."

"Belgian chocolate is the best. My friend from Paris sends me Belgian chocolates sometimes, and if the Parisians think that Belgian chocolates are the best, you can believe it."

"Tootsie rolls are not chocolate. They are chocolate-flavored wax."

My dear, newly found, family, I wish that I could commune with you in person. But that's only assuming that there were no virus to fear, and that we had enough chocolate to go around. In other circumstances, I would kill you without hesitation unless all you had on you were Tootsie rolls.

Those are gross.

And yeah, "sharing" isn't happening.

I will always have a special place in my heart for M&M's. When I was first dating the father of my kids, I was taking a nap and he woke me up right in the middle of a dream in which I was reaching into my desk drawer for a bag of M&M's. (You know you're a goner when you DREAM about chocolate.) I told him about the dream he had interrupted, and he apologized for waking me and told me to go back to sleep. When I woke up later, there was a giant bag of peanut M&M's on my bed! I mean, I already loved him, but that gesture really pushed it over the top.

We were together for 12 years when he died. A little while after his death, I was walking past the candy aisle in Target and heard something fall. Not a soul was in the aisle. There on the floor was a giant bag of M&M's. Crazy, buy 100% true story.

we have to accept that there are things in the Universe that defy logic. As committed as I am to rationalism and the scientific method, I have had experiences that refute common place explanations.

Off topic, I know, but just earlier today, I was telling a friend about a beloved pet who came back to say goodbye to me after she was put down at the vet's.

And when I was a child, I had an experience that could best be described as "remote viewing" in which I found myself seeing through the eyes of a cat that I was tormenting. That second experience changed my behavior as you would expect. I even remember my heart racing and my breath moving my tiny torso in and out as I peered out from under the couch.

Which is beginning to frustrate me, as I'm 72 and my husband is 73 and has decided he likes getting out of the house to shop for odds and ends of groceries. When I told him about Gov Newsom saying we needed to shut ourselves in, he came very close to saying the Gov could kiss his ass. SMH

Tonight I'll try to set up a time with one of two people who offered to help last month, to see if I can get the rest of what I should have on hand. Like maybe a big bag of semisweet chocolate chips As one can easily see from this thread, that is survival food.
