People are not taking the coronavirus seriously at all

Several local people I've talked to either:

1. Had the flu at some point this winter and think it was actually the coronavirus and figure they've had it and can't get it or be a carrier so they don't need to worry about anything and are just carrying on as usual.

2. Think we in suburban areas don't have to worry about gatherings - it's just an issue in big cities but in less populated places it won't become an issue. Again, they care carrying on as usual.

I don't even know what to say. I think people will be in for a rude awakening when a lot of people start getting sick at the same time. I really hope I'm wrong though. I keep hoping I'm overreacting.

The problem is going to be is these people doing this are going to cause the health systems to become overwhelmed. Yet, when these same people that created the crisis get infected with it, they're going to expect to jump to the head of the line to get taken care of. They just don't understand the magnitude of this.

to be blunt. Isolation attempts won't work here. My guess is virus will work its way through population, kill lots of people, until it is slowed by a vaccine or immunity improvements.

They could very well be right. The CDC reported that flu deaths are up more than 65% so far this season. I highly doubt the abnormally high number of flu deaths this season were all the flu and not largely caused by the coronavirus

I was sickly for about 3 weeks. I called in sick the first three days, which were the worst. If you take any more than that for the flu, you'll probably lose your job. It was an upper respiratory illness, but I didn't have shortness of breath.

I would think it could have been coronavirus, BUT nobody I came into contact with got sick. Coronavirus is highly contagious.

The difference is the flu is something that is spread out over several months that allows the health care system to keep up. If you start having the same amount of people (if not more) come up with the Corona-virus over the next 2 weeks (if not longer), the health care system is going to become overwhelmed. That's why they're trying to flatten the curve so that the number of cases can get stretched over a longer period of time.

It was a bad flu year. Why couldn't it have just been the flu? There are bad flu years. I don't think we know more than the CDC and WHO and they're saying the coronavirus hasn't been in the US that long.

and I'm sure if they do autopsies on people who were suspected of having the Flu in that region prior to that they bodies will test positive for the coronavirus. It is far too early to tell when it began since they do not even know how it begin, they only have theories at this point.

They know how diseases spread and how quickly and they have a pretty good idea with this, even if it's too early to know everything precisely. They would know if it was in the US all winter.

I will bump this thread in a few weeks and we'll see what the WHO estimates the date of it's origin is then.

Of course there will always be a subset of idiots out there. I also see some folks who are driven by fear of losing money so much they keep going into the office. I get it. No one knows how you are going to pay your bills. I'm right there with you. But you aren't going to need to worry about paying those debts when your dead. We are all in the same boat. I seriously doubt your water or power will get turned off. I would worry more about making sure you have food and enough to keep you busy while you are inside. If you are not a health care worker or work in the food chain or other essential public services...Just stay home... And keep your teenagers inside too.

unfortunately, then it might be to late.

The social darwinists of the right don't give a crap how many people die. If you can't or will not protect yourself and die.....too bad that is what you deserve.

This is the same attitude they have about welfare and birth control. All these protective/social measures come between the people and the "natural" consequences of events and behavior. You are supposed to starve and suffer if you are poor and don't make yourself rich. You are supposed to get pregnant and suffer child birth and the responsibility of a child if have sex. You are supposed to get sick and possibly die if some new version of the flu arises.

Unless of course, you are complaining about the media, you have no self responsibility as to what you watch, read, listen to from the media. It is all the media's fault.
