I posted Friday during Trumps Rose Garden farce that Trump had deflected the question about why he dismantled the pandemic team to claim that the swine flu, with Biden heading the task force, had caused 14,000 deaths. At the time, there was a 17 hour old Trump tweet that said Bidens mismanagement had caused the death of 12,000.
He just put up a tweet this afternoon that says 17,000 died of the swine flu.
How many more will Trumps time machine kill in the coming days?
btw, swine flu actually killed about 12,400.

(13,875 posts)It was a variant of the flu that was not adequately covered by that years vaccine.
The flu normally kills about 25,000 Americans a year.

(13,875 posts)Your numbers are right. Over 60 million got it and 12,000+ died in the US. The CDC estimate was that 150,000-575,000 died worldwide.
As with most Trump delusions, truth is the opposite of what he is now inventing. The 2009 swine flu response by the US (where the virus originated) is considered an example of a proper and life-saving response by government. Obama declared a national health emergency around the time of the first death, weeks before WHO declared it a worldwide pandemic.

(9,313 posts)Given the Influenza A (H1N1) is now one of several endemic variations of seasonal flu, it is still killing people.
However, it has a case fatality rate lower than many typical seasonal flu's.
The number of deaths is mixed in with reports of deaths related to other seasonal flu's.
You know, a rate lower than Trump repeatedly dismissed as inconsequential with his absurd comparisons of COVID-19 to flu.
Trump's assinine tweet and fact checking on Obama admin's response.
....The USA was never set up for this, just look at the catastrophe of the H1N1 Swine Flu (Biden in charge, 17,000 people lost, very late response time), but it soon will be. Great decision to close our China, and other, borders early. Saved many lives!
Contrary to Trumps suggestion that the Obama administration did nothing, officials declared a public health emergency early in the H1N1 outbreak, secured funding from Congress and ultimately declared a national emergency, as well explain below.
On top of that, the CDC sequenced the new virus, created testing kits, and the Food and Drug Administration approved multiple vaccines, among other actions.
Rep. Michael Burgess, a Republican from Texas, praised the CDC at a House hearing in 2016 for quickly developing a vaccine for the swine flu in about six months in time for the start of the school year in September 2009. So thats a 6-month time frame if Im doing my math correctly that you were able to identify the genetic sequence of the virus, reverse engineer a vaccine, test it, assure its safety and efficacy, and get it to school teachers on the second week of school. Thats pretty impressive, he said.
On April 15, 2009, the first infection was identified in California, according to the CDC, and less than two weeks later, on April 26, 2009, the Obama administration declared a public health emergency. The day before, on April 25, the World Health Organization had declared a public health emergency.
Dr. Richard Besser, then-acting director of the CDC, confirmed to the press on the day of the U.S. declaration that there were 20 cases of H1N1 in the U.S., and that all of the individuals in this country who have been identified as cases have recovered.
