Understanding evangelicals

When I was a little younger and trying to be open minded I let a couple evangelical acquaintances preach to me a bit. Even then the hypocrisy was too much for me. But seeing them line up behind Trump has led me to hold them all in contempt. I’m sure there are a few who would refer to themselves as evangelicals and try to live right, (to those who do so and reject Trump and the rethugs credo, I’m not talking about you) but as a whole those who identify as such are beyond my understanding

The only thing I can see is their claim to be “forgiven”. It gives them carte Blanche to act in any selfish way they wish, while vilifying everyone else. Because they have special dispensation and are forgiven you see. I guess that’s an attractive premise if you can swallow it; you are special so you can do anything you want while others deserve condemnation. I think the handful that actually walk their talk tend to be quiet about it and largely don’t need to worry about forgiveness. Which brings us to Trump himself. He doesn’t know or care about any of that bible stuff but he can recognize a bunch of rubes waiting to be fleeced and manipulated.

It will be interesting to see how their message evolves as this virus tears thru their ranks. Maybe some will have second thoughts but I suspect they will just twist themselves in knots to somehow justify themselves and their god-king.

faithful enough to Jesus.

After it hits them or someone they love, they'll blame it on Satan.

my ex has a brother. Big time catholic. Confessed his sins, took communion, then that night was at the bar, drinking and womanizing. if his wife complained a few knocks up the side of her head shut her up. Back in the confessional..lather, rinse, repeat.

That’s basically the attitude of many evangelicals that I’ve met regarding Jesus.

Just believe he existed, and disregard BELIEF in his (supposed) teachings such as “You cannot serve both God and money.”

"Children." Jesus does not teach forgiveness in his higher wisdom. He teaches the need to pay off one's spiritual debt. That's in the warning about getting thrown into prison and not getting out until the debt is paid to the last cent. In other words, karma. The Catholics interpret this as being the soul sent to limbo, but that's incorrect. The Prodigal Son parable shows how the debt is paid: reincarnation, the "son" or soul living among "swine" or unclean flesh or human bodies. That one son needs a herd of swine or many human lives.
