That would be the most likely reason. Someone critical to the vote can't be in attendence. No, not rbg, probably one of the republicans. Otherwise roberts wouldn't have held up hearings. He may have felt he was losing a critical vote, and rbg wouldn't be it.

They're suspending arguments for all the cases in a certain time frame.

"All the cases for the upcoming session" is more informative than "several cases" and resolves the question.
