(25,857 posts)This is a completely different virus.
And if you think this virus will resemble that of the 1918 flu virus, then you haven't been paying attention. This is NOTHING like that.

(13,783 posts)I got a pulse oxygen gadget so, in case one of us gets sick, we can give the PCP that info. We really want to stay at home if at all possible. Hubby has a pulse of 63 and oxygen of 98. I think he's in good shape. I've been meaning to find out why diabetes is an "underlying condition" of note. It's well controlled type II. If anyone here knows, I'd appreciate the info.

(19,459 posts)As you know, diabetics have to be cautious about kidney health, and some may have decreased kidney function as a result of the diabetes.
That is my understanding, anyway.

(10,572 posts)Last fall he was in the hospital for over a week on ventilation. Hes had issues with it off and on for about 20 years. His pulmonologist says its Crohns his GI says its not, but doesnt know what it is. Hes been on steroids and an inhaler for the last 6 months.

Crohns disease (CD) is a systemic illness with a constellation of extraintestinal manifestations affecting various organs. Of these extraintestinal manifestations of CD, those involving the lung are relatively rare. However, there is a wide array of lung manifestations, ranging from subclinical alterations, airway diseases and lung parenchymal diseases to pleural diseases and drug-related diseases. The most frequent manifestation is bronchial inflammation and suppuration with or without bronchiectasis. Bronchoalveolar lavage findings show an increased percentage of neutrophils. Drug-related pulmonary abnormalities include disorders which are directly induced by sulfasalazine, mesalamine and methotrexate, and opportunistic lung infections due to immunosuppressive treatment. In most patients, the development of pulmonary disease parallels that of intestinal disease activity. Although infrequent, clinicians dealing with CD must be aware of these, sometimes life-threatening, conditions to avoid further impairment of health status and to alleviate patient symptoms by prompt recognition and treatment. The treatment of CD-related respiratory disorders depends on the specific pattern of involvement, and in most patients, steroids are required in the initial management.

(6,251 posts)I'm on an immunotherapy drug right now and I don't know whether that makes me a greater or lesser risk.
But my biggest risk is my mother. We live together. She's 96 years old, with high blood pressure and borderline type 2 diabetes. Luckily, she has no mental issues - she's sharp as a tack!
We are self-isolating, with occasional trips to the grocery.

(25,183 posts)I'm 64, have diabetes and high blood pressure, both controlled by medication. But my lady is 63, soon to be 64, she has high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. Every other time she gets a cold or the flu, she ends up with bronchitis, and often has to use inhalers.
I made our last trip out of the house yesterday, being as panic buying has set in here in SC, there's nothing more to be gained by going out to look for anything else. She may drop food off on her brother's doorstep, but she will not contact him other than by phone, he's somewhat on the reckless side, and is probably not keeping away from others. I have little doubt he'll get this, and even she is resigned to that possibility.
There's no sense in both of them succumbing to this.
