Ron Johnson: We don't shut down our economy because tens of thousands of people die on the highways.

“Getting coronavirus is not a death sentence except for maybe no more than 3.4 percent of our population… probably far less. We don’t shut down our economy because tens of thousands of people die on the highways.”

— Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), quoted by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Coronavirus is very contagious, hence measures to limit its spread are appropriate, just as are speed limits, DUI penalties, and mandatory auto safety measures. All of which, BTW, people like Ron Johnson opposed as unnecessary and a burden on industry back when they were proposed.

If driving a car resulted in a 20% chance of being intubated in an ICU and a 3% chance of death, we WOULD shut down all highways until the death rate was reduced.

Yes, about 45,000 people a year die from MVA. 35,0000 from gun violence, 40,000 from flu. 100,0000 from tobacco related deaths. Those numbers are horrible, but they are predicatable and people ARE trying to intervene to reduce the numbers. We as a society live with that while we search for answers.

Does the idiot know that 3.4% of 330 million is 11,220,000? That is more than 11 million people that would die in the course of a year to 18 months. He doesn't think that that would impact our economy if we don't stop it? Those are the people who might die. The prediction is that 60% to 70% will get the virus. That is between 198 million and 231 million. If even half of those affected are debilitated, that means that between 99 million and 115 million people will be out of commission at one point within the next year. What does that asshole think that will do to the economy?

to all causes, that is about 4.3 million deaths. A 3.4% mortality rate from COVID19 would add 11.9 MILLION DEATHS to that number. It’s doubtful we have the infrastructure to cope with that many in such a short space of time. The government would end up storing corpses in refrigerated trailers until they could be buried or cremated. It would be a disaster.

That was the projection from the British study which finally spurred The Dotard to admitting there was a real danger here -- 2.2 million dead Americans if nothing further were done.
