Coping skills

I'm seeing a lot of folks here are understandably struggling with trying to cope with this stress we're in. Something that's working for me is watching videos on the subject from some of my favorite mental health experts. I started watching videos to help me get through my failing marriage and ultimate divorce last year, and now these saviors are putting out videos on coping with the stress caused by the current situation.

Some of my favorites are from Richard Grannon, Dr. Ramani Durvasula, and Dr. Les Carter.

Richard Grannon said something in one of his recent videos that I love. He said to think of our self-isolation because of the current situation as a "Personal Development Home Retreat". I find that attitude to be very useful to me. I'm concentrating on eating correctly, getting exercise, and my continuing self-therapy to learn about myself.

Dr. Ramani is an expert on narcissism and has clearly indicated that 45 is a narcissist. I find her to be very calming.

I've seen videos by Dr. Les Carter posted here on DU. He's also very calming to me.

There are a ton of helpful videos and articles on the 'net. This is a good time to take advantage of them.

And then we also have each other here at DU. We're going to get through this.

I highly recommend doing it in an actual journal with a pen, if you can. I find it helps me to sort out my thoughts.

When I first got back into journaling last year, while going through divorce, I did it on my computer. That was good because I was able to get it out very quickly. Now that I've made so much progress in my personal growth and self-discovery, I find it more helpful to use pen and paper.

Anyway, this is what's been working for me.

Breathing exercises are something that we can do anywhere in any situation. Concentrating on breathing takes our thoughts away from the negative, and also helps us get the oxygen we're lacking while panicking.

have had this gif forever, but I find myself using it more and more these days. The best part is that mindful breathing is free and you can do it anywhere at anytime.

In thru the nose for 5 seconds (seems a looong time at first).

Hold for 5 seconds.

Out the mouth for 5 seconds.

Repeat as long as necessary.
