Over and out

is the path to sanity here. I stuck my toes in the water here again recently after quite a long absence. Big mistake. I knew in the back of my mind how it goes here and on Kos when you don't go with the prevailing wisdom. I should have listened to the back of my mind. Like many others I will just say that it really isn't worth it to me to take the time to partake in discussions here. I'm not in to posting things and then being attacked personally by people who easily display that they did not read my post but simply decided to bash me because I don't drink a particular flavor of Kool-Aid. It is sad to see what this has become over the years because this really used to be a great place for discussion and views. Now it's become like Mediaite without the colorful graphics. The days of Bartcop and others are long gone.

In his latter days I got tired of seeing every third post about what an asshole Tiger Woods was.
The guy had some good stuff from back in those early days, but he also had very skin thin when it came to criticism.
As long as DU has the Trash and Ignore function (for forums as well as people), I'm not going to let anyone get me too upset here

you mean but in his last months he was obviously not himself because of the health issues. He did start to lean heavily on the concept of generating heat with posters it seemed. Maybe what I'm reacting to is the trolling/bots etc. I don't know. Several years ago I received a lifetime ban from C&L because I sort of stuck up for a poster who got personally attacked by a contributor who didn't like the critique of his article the poster made. The critique was factual and actually rather mild and completely non-personal but the contributor came back with what you would expect on Newsmax or something. Several of us pointed out that this was contrary to our understanding of commenting policy and that certainly a contributor should be held to the same standards as everyone else. The admins ripped all of us repeatedly and then banned us all wholesale. I just don't dig this kind of thing where putting forward for discussion various facets of issues is met with vitriol. I guess I'm expecting something different than what this is now in 2020. Thanks for being thoughtful with your response.

a reaction on the way out the door. This is kind of becoming something else than what many of us remember or go for and so it's like giving a heads-up as we hit the door about how the changes are affecting some of us and giving us the door as a best case option. First experience with DU began over 20 years ago. Things change.

But the snark fails to do much but demonstrate what I spoke about. As I said this is not my first go round on DU and my being shown as being here since 2009 is a function of having been here before and left and then coming back in 2009. I take great discretion in the things I give opinions/engage in factual discussion etc. That also seems to be a problem here for some people. I've noticed over the last several years that if someone makes a comment or offers something many times they are treated dismissively based on having only a few posts/ being new etc. Perhaps I was mistaken in thinking that a group of people that purports to welcome open factual discussion and informed opinion would actually respond to the subject matter of a post in a coherent style like one might find or expect in a public or academic setting. I was wrong. I probably will not find that anywhere so since I don't go for the "banter from a bar stool" approach to all of this it's time to go.

Read your initial comment to me again. I see that you don't feel it was snarky but please note that it addresses absolutely nothing I posted. I clearly stated my reasons in the post and I was really being rather diplomatic because Roland if I really wanted to engage in some sort of nasty online back and forth I assure you I can. But I didn't and so Roland you have a good time and look for people to attack.

Been here myself since 2002?? Fairly early, lost all my log in stuff when whenever that thing happened and you had to redo. Had enough of politics by then TOO much. I did peek in every week not nearly enough to engage. Now I come back because, well you know.... chaos! And find myself subjected to snark and questioned by posters I had previously years past had great experience with. This place does not resemble the refuge it once was.

It must have been something to see, back in the old days when DU was all respectful, well-reasoned argumentation. Now it's all cursing, fear-mongering, cheer-leading and cute pet crap.

for a post where the only thing the member did wrong was not echo with the chamber. There was absolutely no violation of any DU rules. I voted to leave the post, but when I came back later it was "post removed."

So you're not wrong...
