At the televised coronavirus press conference this morning, President Trump announced that he is considering using Carnival Cruise Line ships as floating hospitals for coronavirus patients. President Trump stated that he received a generous offer from Carnival Corporations Chairman Micky Arison.
Trump further stated that he will be speaking with the governors of the state of New York and California to obtain their thoughts regarding how the cruise ships might be used. The president said that he was scheduled to meet with FEMA after the press conference.
The U.S. federal government used Carnival cruise ships in the past following hurricanes which struck the Caribbean in the fall of 2017 and New Orleans in 2005. Carnival made tremendous profits after the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) accepted no-bid contracts totaling over $310,000,000 for the use of four ships.
Although Trump characterized cruise tycoon Arisons offer as generous, he did not mention any details of the proposed deal.

It's not like the cruise lines have any actual business right now - seems like a shame to leave those ships just sitting there empty, we will need every available space we can find soon.

(10,136 posts)If properly cleaned and if rigorous isolation procedures are followed a cruise ship might not be a bad place to isolate patients and staff. Given how good a job they do at spreading diseases in "normal" times I'm not expecting much.

(12,586 posts)They were used almost exclusively during Dubya's vanity war ("All great presidents have been war time presidents," he told his biographer) and as a result taxpayers got stuck with millions -- maybe billions -- of expenses they would not have had under the normal acquisition process.

better to use facilities near existing staff.equipment...maybe to relocate patients who no longer need intensive care
