(2,041 posts)Both pickup and delivery haven't been available for us all week.

(14,176 posts)and they had no delivery windows in the next three days, twice this week. I was only going to them because the supermarket in my neighborhood is totally out of pasta, rice, dried beans, and TP and Amazon Fresh had all three.

(102,421 posts)Well, I did that and was supposed to pick up early this morning, but an hour before the time scheduled to do so, I got an email saying the order was canceled (which can only mean they failed to pull the items off of inventory) and now the items were neither available in the warehouses OR online.
My grocery store was likewise pushing this "pick up" option. Yet there were no available appointments to do so for the next 7 days. Delivery? Yes, for $9.95... BUT there was no guarantee that the items I prepaid to purchase would be available, even if the order was placed & accepted. My neighbor (with respiratory risk factors) said that out of 15 items, she got two!
Ok, so what about ordering from the grocery store (staple items) and having them shipped? Well, I decided to try THAT. I ordered the dog food I'd tried to get through the Sam's Club prepurchase/pick-up on Amazon. The order placed and though it was Prime, I wasn't surprised that there was no one or two-day shipping guarantee. But, in fact the order confirmation said next Wednesday (7-days), so I will track it but not hold my breath it actually ships.
I likewise placed an order for some routine nonperishable items from King Soopers/Krogers using their shipping service. Well, several items were simply not available, but I did order about a dozen items and nothing suggested they were not in stock. The order placed, accepted and now I am in oblivion since no further information is given until (IF) they actually ship it. Who knows if anything will actually ship to me.
I guess patience and fingers crossed.

(25,183 posts)been wondering, "What will life be like after this is all over?" and part of the answer is, shopping in ways other than rolling a cart through the aisles and loading it up yourself will be less trustworthy than people thought it would be.
Me, I prefer to pick my own groceries, never went for this online or pickup stuff.

(102,421 posts)Maybe you are lucky, but going at the opening-- just AFTER the trucks arrive-- I am still; met with empty shelves. Yesterday, I had to go to a King Soopers and Safeway grocery store, a Walmart and Target, just to get two gallons of milk and eggs and some cheddar cheese.
(Walmart had the eggs. Neither grocery store had ANY) while 2% milk ended up being available at King Soopers and shredded cheddar cheese at Target.
I'm not looking for the elusive TP or hand wipes. Just routine staples...
It is unnerving as hell. I think the problem is that with the closure of the restaurants, Gen Xers, Millenials-- who routinely eat their meals out, are all of a sudden having to eat meals at home and thus there is much greater demand for all kinds of groceries.

(25,183 posts)Shelves have been emptied of staples in my area, I found that out on Monday when I went to the store for what was supposed to be one last trip. The next day, I found another store that had some items that the first store did not have.
So, we're hunkered in for the duration, except for trips to Kroger to pick up my diabetes medication. It needs refrigeration, so I cannot get a three month supply, and further, my insurance will not pay for more than one month at a time. If I'm going to have to go into the store for this script, I will be walking out with other stuff we need, like fresh produce, and maybe some more meat.

(25,183 posts)It's easier to compare prices, and my favorite supermarket has all kinds of discounted things. There's the over-ripe produce section (banana bread, yay!) the past due date meats, the we-baked-too-much bakery section, the smash-dent-and-discontinued section, and in the other refrigerated sections, there are bright orange-red stickers with "Special Today" on them that lead me to bargain priced juices, cold cuts, and dairy products.
You won't find them on a store's website.

(63,221 posts)Whole Foods is backed up for over a week. Luckily I have a friend who is picking me up to go to Wegmans in Newton, MA tomorrow, but who knows what kind of inventory they will have.
This is really starting to scare me. If I get sick, I might survive, but if I run out of food and can't get any, I'm probably not going to last very long. I live in a studio with very little storage space so I don't have very much backup. Maybe I should have prepared better, but I never expected this.

(31,261 posts)You can install one of the multiple rack systems. That would allow you to store several weeks worth of food at a time.

(41,182 posts)we didn't think things would escalate this fast and other impt. matters came up. Notably helping out folks.
Hope for the best is trite to say, but all we can do for now.
Good luck with your shopping trip and all s.m.

(63,221 posts)I just hope I can find some TP, Clorox wipes and basic staples - rice, beans, frozen veggies, onions, olive oil, etc. Things that aren't perishable (or very) and will stretch for a while.
How are you doing? Hope all is well with you.

(3,268 posts)along with Hannaford/Stop and Shop. Both swamped but it would have been nice if they had carved out slots for people who had already become regulars. Instead even though both sites list every grocery item I bought and how many times I bought them I cannot schedule a pickup.

(3,405 posts)I've been using pick-up or delivery for a few years. My King Soopers was out five days when I scheduled. My biggest problem is I keep thinking of things I need to add. Sunday can't come too soon for my pantry.
