would there be a recommendation that everyone wear a face mask?
because
1. they help prevent you from touching your own face, thus becomming infected
2. if you are asymptomatic, it might prevent you from infecting others
3. just maybe it might prevent you from breathing in someones sneeze... might

(51,590 posts)I wonder that about gloves since it is the touching that spreads the germs the most. I wouldn't mind a full hazmat suit myself.

(115,677 posts)pick up lots of germs And transfer them to the next things you touch (nose, doorknob, etc). It works for a short single use like pumping gas, but then you are wasting the limited supply of gloves and could achieve the same positive effect by not wearing gloves but sanitizing your hands after touching whatever.

I have a box of blue gloves I got awhile ago for other reasons.. and I've worn them out to stores the last few times and on the bus.
I have a mask, too.. I got for not breathing in super glue fumes. It's small and funky and uncomfortable.. haven't worn that yet.

(51,590 posts)I have worn the blue sterile gloves I had for misc stuff but I reuse them now (I take them off after I wash them with hot soap and water). I have tons of cloth gloves but I don't know how safe they are (fabric, calfskin, suede, polyester, cotton, etc). Do you?
I have a mask from 1999 when my classroom was full of mold. I've worn that and another one I saved out too (reuse them). I've only been out 3 times in 2 weeks and live with my little dog so I am pretty safe. Knock wood.

(44,973 posts)Apparently we can make our own face masks using cotton materials. They will be better than nothing.

I think staff of grocery stores and others continuing to work in settings where proper distancing can not always be followed, should be wearing them, but they need a proper training and a system where their coworkers "police" unconscious/unsafe behavior (rubbing, accidentally touching face or mask, etc) when observed.

(23,218 posts)Looking at videos out of South Korea, they all wore masks and quarantined themselves. They seemed to be quite concerned and disciplined.
They disinfected streets and other areas at night with some type of bleach or disinfectant, etc.
Sure, the last time I checked, they did have quite a lot of cases, but not a high death rate.
The US is going to get hit pretty damn hard.
Talking to people in other countries, I've been repeatedly asked.....Why are all of those people on Spring Break and vacationing?
I've heard video of kids in FL saying, "We're not afraid of coronavirus, while laughing and drinking."
Right now, they're spreading it like wildfire through Florida. Then, they'll take it home and spread it to their parents and grandparents and wonder why they're on vents. Utter stupidity.
I've seen most countries spraying their streets at night. Why are we not doing that here?

(4,950 posts)Because at my hospital, if you don't get the flu shot, you have to wear a mask almost everywhere for months.
Also, the Dr. office requests you put a mask on if you have flu symptoms.
As does the hospital if you have cold symptoms.
So I think in this case Dr. Fauci's statement about masks not being helpful/preventative is full of shit and motivated by shortages and politics.
Because the CDC is now recommending fucking bandanas.
Are we going to start using leeches next?
