Presidents are remember for their words of encouragement during tough times. This is what is expected from them, this is what we need. That question opened a door to make a great statement. Even his handlers should have trained him to expect such a question.
So I think that was response was pre-arranged to invoke that the "Press" is the enemy. That we should believe Trump not the Press.
