A 44-year-old with the coronavirus said he's had colds and flus that are worse, but understands why
it could be deadlyTodd Herman was recovering from the flu when a new and unusual symptom arose: difficulty breathing.
"This isn't normal," Herman, a 44-year-old entrepreneur and business coach, remembers thinking.
A few days later, Herman tested positive for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, thanks to a previously scheduled visit to his orthopedic surgeon, who by then had taken on coronavirus-related duties. Being able to get the test, Herman said, was "dumb luck."
Herman has been quarantined with his wife Valerie and three kids in their New York City apartment since being diagnosed over a week ago. He talked to Business Insider about what the illness has felt like for him, what life in isolation is like, and why he hopes Americans will heed public health recommendations and reach out to others to prevent a mental-health crisis.
