Israeli doctor in Italy: We no longer help those over 60

Israeli doctor in Italy: We no longer help those over 60
Israeli medical doctor Gai Peleg told Israeli television that in northern Italy the orders are not to allow those over 60 access to respiratory machines.
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF MARCH 22, 2020 09:21

Italy suffered more coronavirus-related victims than China with 4,825 confirmed deaths and 5,000 confirmed patients in the last 24 hours, Channel 12 reported on Sunday.

Israeli doctor Gai Peleg, who is currently working to save lives in Parma, Italy, told Channel 12 that things are only getting worse as the number of patients keeps growing.

As his department receives coronavirus patients who are terminally ill the focus is to allow patients to meet loved ones and communicate with them during their last moments despite the quarantine regulations. Other reports claim that, as the numbers of dead increases, some families find themselves unable to secure a proper burial for their loved ones.

Peleg said that, from what he sees and hears in the hospital, the instructions are not to offer access to artificial respiratory machines to patients over 60 as such machines are limited in number.

Israel is currently purchasing thousands of respiratory machines, and they are meant to arrive in the country by mid-May. On Saturday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel is using every means it has to secure medical equipment to help patients during the pandemic.

Won't get to attend her funeral either. In Italy, it's straight to the crematoriums.

she had enough time, amirite? If she hasn't gotten rich enough to buy her own vent by age 60, then she's just another loser."

Honestly, I'm surprised trump hasn't made this his only directive.

Hence the high death rate. Critical condition, no ventilator, equals deceased.

Because if I need hospitalization, I'm going to know I survived because someone else had to die for me to do so.

If that have to ration care it should be based on general health condition, not just age.

Instead it will be based off of insurance reimbursement rates and who has the ability to pay.

I would understand if the patients coming in are too far gone for treatment - those that couldn't get to the hospital in time because things got really bad really quickly after being somewhat under control at home.

But the way that this disease seems to progress is that susceptible people who are already hospitalized go from being in serious condition to critical and then move into the ICU onto ventilators and respirators. It would seem (from my reading anyhow) that this doctor is saying that if you're 60 and above you aren't offered the life-saving treatment that you require if you're already a patient - that seems odd.

Also, he said "from what he sees and hears" the instructions are not to give treatment to that age group - not that he got a direct order - just what he thinks is happening.

We might get to that state of triage here: no help if you're over 60. But, there will be exceptions for stars.

I'm not worthy.
