Traffic and Pollution Plummet as U.S. Cities Shut Down for Coronavirus
In cities across the United States, traffic on roads and highways has fallen dramatically over the past week as the coronavirus outbreak forces people to stay at home and everyday life grinds to a halt.
Pollution has dropped too.
A satellite that detects emissions in the atmosphere linked to cars and trucks shows huge declines in pollution over major metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Chicago and Atlanta.
Of course it won't last, but it sure is neat to see...

(2,768 posts)Electric vehicles and green power should be a go after this. It wont be because of "reasons". but it should be.

(38,427 posts)get up a small hill on the road. This goes on day and night. Late at night it slows down a lot but from time to time you can hear the cars go up the small hill....
...Also, I get a lot planes flying over our area because when a plane takes off from the major airport (O'Hare Airport) they fly over our area on the way to New York, or anywhere east...(and anywhere includes Europe)
No airplanes today, no cars going by up the hill. Extremely quiet.. The air is also very clear and breathable.
The last time it was this quiet was 9/11! Oh, Sundays are usually quiet, but never like this.

(612 posts)My house is about 25 or 30 feet from a busy road - and one of the largest high schools in the city a block away in one direction and an elementary school a few blocks down the other. Also surrounded by churches on either side, each a couple of doors down. Lots of those damn little noisemaker two-wheelers love to rev it up around here too... Semi-dense residential area, so all combined the road is usually very busy most of the time.
The quiet is deafening, but the sound of birdcalls and bees buzzing are wonderful!

(37,160 posts)The water is blue and clear, said Gloria Beggiato, who owns the celebrated Metropole Hotel a few steps from St Marks square and has a view over the Venice lagoon. It is calm like a pond, because there are no more waves caused by motorised boats transporting day-tripper tourists. And of course, the giant cruise ships have disappeared.
Under Venices strict rules of self-confinement to prevent the spread of the coronavirus all journeys but a trip to walk the dog or buy food are forbidden the ancient city has been transformed almost overnight. La Serenissimas hundreds of canals have been emptied of speeding motorboat taxis, transport and tourist boats. The chugging vaporetti water buses now run on a reduced timetable. Even most of the gondolas are moored.
The clarity of the water has improved dramatically. Cormorants have returned to dive for fish they can now see. At the Piazzale Roma vaporetto stop, ducks have even made a nest. Someone has put up a sign saying, Dont tread on the duck eggs, Beggiato said. All totally unimaginable a while ago.
