or were getting ready to, declare martial law (early 1980s). We managed to be one of the last people on the plane (me, an American, my friend, who's had diplomatic status w/ Peru credentials, and was a Peruvian citizen). Scary, but we managed to get onboard solely because of the credentials.

Remember seeing military guys walking around in camo toting their automatic weapons. That was an eye opener. They had absolute power, and they knew it. Made me squirm. Made me happy to live in the usa where that 'supposedly' doesn't happen. But things change, no?

were in Acapulco, and we had heard that some of the tourist buses were actually high jacked, so we were glad for the army presence. It does take some getting used to, but they were there to protect the tourists, so we really didn't have anything to worry about.
