Not big but we got out of the house. Only 4.1 but it rolled us around a bit. Another aftershock I guess. It felt like more than that but I guess it's hard to tell. Our 5.7 the other day didn't seem as bad as the 5.1 in Europe today.

(13,485 posts)I would think a hurricane would be a considerable issue during a pandemic.

(51,648 posts)Sometimes I feel them when they are far away but not when they are closer. There was one at 3 PM after my students had already gone home and I felt what seemed like an airplane dropping on the roof of my classroom. Glad the kids weren't there. It didn't roll or shake it was just a BOOM!

(13,485 posts)then a rolling roar. The two booms bounced my son and I up on the floor a little.

It was a weird sensation. Different than the bigger one last week.

(13,485 posts)First a shake then it rolled and then another big shake then a roll. The 5.7 the other day was like two big booms in a row then a rolling roar.. sort of.

My nerves are on edge. Cant imagine how ppl nearer are feeling. All those children afraid to sleep 😢😢😢
Then the thought of the caged immigration children. 😭😭😭
Sorry.

(13,485 posts)Those poor children. That's worse than any earthquake.

(86,889 posts)so even though they may register as a high magnitude in some cases and not feel like much depends on which kind. Some feel like the ground is rolling in a wave under you like passing a long rod under a carpet; some feel like that part of the planet is jumping up and down without regard to what's on the surface; some can feel like the ground is moving sideways.
The kind of quake depends on what kind of fault is activated and what kind of tectonic environment it takes place in so they can feel like any range of things and be any size, almost, and really get your attention.
I've experienced 3.0M and been freaked out while experiencing a 4.7M elsewhere was like someone threw a medium sized stick and hit my tent with it, nothing else.

(13,485 posts)You can see it on the edge of town following along the foothills of the mountains. This particular quake is not on that fault though it's the opposite side of town nearer to the salt lake. I would like to find out more about the tectonics around here. I've heard there's a liquification effect on the west side but looking at the solid rock to the east on the Wasatch front I'm sceptical. But there are so many geological features around here from so many different epochs maybe it has to do with layers around ancient lake Bonneville. A nice new study to follow up on.

(86,889 posts)and spent several years learning about the regional geologic features. It appears you are within the plane of the ancient lakebed or right next to it which indicates that there could be isostatic rebound, which has been said of other but not all quakes in that area. Isostatic rebound, in simple terms, is where the lack of water that was once present is no longer there weighing down the lithospheric layer, the ground will eventually respond by lifting. There's more to it but I won't try to get technical here. I thought it was such an interesting phenomena that I remembered the term.
It could be something else, I'm not looking at any references at the moment because I feel lazy right now.
The Wasatch front is quite an interesting structure as it has precambrian bedrock exposed, there aren't a whole lot of places where you can find that! But it is thought, last I checked, to be the result of a major series of events that included continent sized tectonic plates smashing together. It really is a fascinating place for geoliwogs.
Since you're near/in the ancient lakebed, liquefaction is a possibility depending on the type of quake that takes place. I could see that being a thing out in the flats more toward Wendover but I suppose it could happen at the base of the front too if lifting was the motion of the event.

(13,485 posts)Just north and in the Salt Lake? That's an amazing conglomeration of layers pushed up from different periods. I'm lazy now myself so I don't want to look it up but there's an area of exposed griss? It's older than the precambrian rock at the bottom of the grand canyon dating more than 2.7 billion yo. Some say 3.2 billion. It's pushed up well over 4000 feet. Not more than a short hike away you stand on some of the most recent chalk rock tallis? I think. Anyway it's an amazing place.

(86,889 posts)Antelope Island! That's fascinating. I spent a lot of time up in Idaho and became familiar with your area through the lens of the Bonneville floods. I'll have to see about going there sometime. Once in a while one of my friends likes to go touring and we often end up in Utah for some reason.

(13,485 posts)But don't visit in April/May. The Noseeums will eat you alive, lay their eggs under your skin. You no like that. I don't know if they acually do that but it sure as hell feels like it. Deet is their favorite condiment. All other times are perfect.
