California's increase of unemployment insurance claims is absolutely staggering. 4,000% increase

https://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/California-unemployment-coronavirus-numbers-news-15152303.php

During a press conference Monday night, Newsom reported that the daily average of claims over the last seven days is 106,000. The normal average per day is just 2,500, meaning the number of jobless claims has increased by over 4,000%. The governor called for block grants from the federal government to help the state pay for benefits.

Pretty low considering the CoL here.

If you work a standard 40 hours, that's $22.50/hr. A lot of people don't make that.

Given that unemployment is a federal-state partnership, it would be nice if we could get the federal government to require a minimum benefit of 60% insurance up to the state median income in order for the state to participate in the partnership. If you make $15/hr, that would increase your benefit by $60 from $300 to $360. I think a change like that would be pretty palatable to Democrats in fairly conservative districts.

whether you make $900 or $9000 a week. And that’s the top rate whether you’re single or have a family.

Compare to Ohio - where the CoL is much lower - where the top benefit for an individual is $480 a week, adjusted to $657 a week if you have three dependents. And OH is a red state.
