As Michigan coronavirus cases and deaths continued to rise Tuesday, Beaumont Health announced it now is "nearing capacity" as it cares for nearly 450 COVID-19 patients across its eight hospitals, and an additional 185 more people await the results of tests.
The health system is "facing limitations and nearing capacity with our testing, personal protective equipment and mechanical ventilators," said Beaumont Health Chief Operating Officer Carolyn Wilson. We are taking steps to increase our capacity, such as converting some of our operating rooms into intensive care units.
We have been actively transferring COVID-19 patients within our system to other Beaumont hospitals, as appropriate, if one hospital has more capacity than another."
Beaumont, which describes itself as Michigan's largest health care system with hospitals in Wayne and Oakland Counties, still had some ventilator capacity Tuesday afternoon, but that could change as more people become infected.
"We will soon be looking at the need for coordinating the care of acute COVID-19 patients across the region and beyond," said Beaumont Health CEO John Fox. "This is why we have been discussing statewide coordination with other hospitals and MDHHS to care for COVID-19 patients.

(27,848 posts)I would have thought, though, that the U of M hospital system was the biggest one in the state.

(36,748 posts)Beaumont is the biggest, but as far as specialties UM hospital is the best in the state.
I go to UM. If they cant handle it, my next destination is the Cleveland Clinic.
