Yahoo's new CEO gets $26 million welcome

http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_19692089

Yahoo (YHOO) is welcoming new CEO Scott Thompson on board with a total pay package worth up to $26 million in his first year at the troubled Internet company, according to regulatory documents filed Friday.

That's far less than the $47 million package that Yahoo awarded former CEO Carol Bartz in 2009, her first year on the job, but it's more than double the $11.9 million that Bartz received in her last full year before she was fired in September.

... While most CEOs are paid well, experts noted that the details of Silicon Valley compensation packages vary widely.

Apple (AAPL) gave its new CEO, Tim Cook, a signing bonus valued at $384 million over the next ten years, when Cook stepped into founder Steve Jobs's shoes last summer.

Could companies like Yahoo be in financial trouble BECAUSE of grotesque CEO pay? How is it possible that the executives get 8 figure bonuses despite that the company's production output is so low?
