Conservative supporters of President Trump are increasingly volunteering to risk death and implicitly the deaths of elderly and at-risk Americans from the coronavirus if it will help the economy.
The push for Americans to get back to work in the face of an unprecedented economic downturn began last week but accelerated on Sunday evening, after the president began pushing the message that we cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself. On Tuesday, Trump said he would love to have the country opened up by Easter, which falls on April 12. Public health experts say it is impossible to predict now when it will be safe to end social distancing measures but are virtually unanimous in believing they will be needed beyond then.
On Monday evening, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick explained how the trade-off between saving lives and spurring the economy worked in his mind.
I just think there are lots of grandparents out there in this country like me
that what we all care about and what we all love more than anything are those children, said Patrick, who turns 70 next week, on Tucker Carlsons primetime Fox News show. My message is that: Lets get back to work. Lets get back to living. Lets be smart about it, and those of us who are 70-plus, well take care of ourselves, but dont sacrifice the country. Dont do that. Dont ruin this great American dream.

Be my guest Patrick but the rest of us are not going to follow you like lemmings off a cliff.

Seriously, fuck these people.

(101,407 posts)I've always thought that the number of heavies that, in the scene where the baddie's lair/plot is falling apart, are still willing to put their lives on the line when it's damn obvious they are not going to get paid again, is ridiculous. Any self-respecting mercenary would be saving their own skin at that point.
But now I see; it's the dumbasses in the Republican party who are willing to die to keep their evil overlords rich.

(52,483 posts)Yeah, some of the volunteers will die too, but mostly it will be innocent people who will die.
Needlessly.

(10,289 posts)Patrick, Glenn Beck and others like him, don't really mean old folks "like me," they're really talking about the poor and minorities. These guys will be the first in line to be hooked up to ventilators and taking up ICU beds.
