Sounds like Trumpsters: Mexican Governor Says Poor Are 'Immune' To Coronavirus

Puebla Gov. Miguel Barbosa’s comment was apparently a response to indications that the wealthy have made up a significant percentage of Mexicans infected.

Likewise sounds like a certain Mississippi Governor.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The governor of a state in central Mexico is arguing that the poor are “immune” to the new coronavirus, even as the federal government suspends all nonessential government activities beginning Thursday in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus.

Puebla Gov. Miguel Barbosa’s comment Wednesday was apparently partly a response to indications that the wealthy have made up a significant percentage of Mexicans infected to date, including some prominent business executives.

Officials say three-quarters of Mexico’s 475 confirmed cases are related to international travel, and the poor do not make many international trips. Some people apparently caught the virus on ski trips to Italy or the United States. The country has seen six deaths so far.

“The majority are wealthy people. If you are rich, you are at risk. If you are poor, no,” Barbosa said of the coronavirus. “We poor people, we are immune.”

Barbosa also appeared to be playing on an old stereotype held by some Mexicans that poor sanitation standards may have strengthened their immune systems by exposing them to bacteria or other bugs.

There is no scientific evidence to suggest the poor are in any way immune to the virus that is causing COVID-19 disease around the world.

Living in worse sanitary condition requires your body to produce more anti-bodies to various infectious diseases.

Let's ignore the obvious so that we can turn our eyes away from the most important factor to consider. That way no blame when politicos ignore the plight of these poor people. They are LUCKY, after all, right?

Given that has not been shown elsewhere across the globe among the poor living in crowded unsanitary conditions OUGHT to make us skeptical that that is the likely explanation.

So subsidizing every American to receive excellent healthcare will require a great deal of more money.
The question I have, is there enough money in the country to accomplish that? I just don't know!

There was a report of several elite members of Mexican society coming back infected from a posh Colorado ski resort. The poor were probably not traveling much outside their communities and thus not encountering the pathogen. I would expect all of this to change rapidly once it is introduced into a community.

Virus doesn't care if a person is rich or poor. So far in Mexico, rich were more likely to get it, if they traveled outside the country. But once virus spreads in the community, poor are not immune from it. It's an absurd statement to make.

I have been living in United States for 60 years, but grew up in India.
Every time I went home for a visit, I came down with something, like flu or nasty cold or diarrhea.
But my relatives living there had no such problems. So I concluded living in US, I lost
a lot of my resistance to infections.

covid-19 will spread in India. It is just beginning there and testing is also just starting.
With more than 4 tomes bigger population, infections and death should be 4 times greater than US.
I am guessing it won't reach that high. I am keeping an eye on stats for both countries.

they get sick or they die and almost no one ever knows about it.

Same with the suffering from malnutrition, poor basic healthcare and shitty housing they experience caused by budget cuts due to tax cuts that benefit only the wealthy. Few that have a voice see the suffering, so no problem.
