https://www.wired.com/story/the-ibuprofen-debate-reveals-the-danger-of-covid-19-rumors/TWO WEEKS AGO, national and world health authoritiesand armchair experts and worried well-meaning peoplewere warning anyone concerned about Covid-19 to avoid ibuprofen. Now, facing contradictory evidence, theyve backed off that claim.
But the brief online furor over whether its safe to use the fever reducer, and the attention paid to the claim that it might be dangerous, are important, both for how people protect themselves in this pandemic and also for how we consume news about it.

The announcement supported a recent statement by the French health minister that ibuprofen may worsen the effects of COVID-19 and should be avoided.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended that people with COVID-19 symptoms avoid taking ibuprofen, after concerns were raised by French officials that it may make the virus more harmful.
A recent study in The Lancet medical journal, theorizing that an enzyme boosted by ibuprofen could enable and exacerbate COVID-19 infections, led France's Health Minister Olivier Veran to suggest via social media that the medicine be avoided.

(6,477 posts)"In the swirl of panic over Covid-19, some national health authorities supported the French advice, and others pushed back against it. At the end of last week, both the European Medicines Agency (the European Unions equivalent of the FDA) and the World Health Organization tried to tamp down the furor. They both weighed in to say there is no reason to stop using ibuprofen to home-treat fever from Covid-19."
Here's the actual WHO tweet and link disclaiming any advice against the use of Ibuprofem. Looks like your Jerusalem Post writer has it wrong, or several days out of date. The whole Wired article shows how the Lancet commentary (not a peer reviewed article) is mainly speculative, and the French Health ministries claims have to be understood in the context of a longer French problem with ibuprofen. The Wired article is really a good antidote to the kinds of (mis)information trafficked in the article you've posted.

Batting down rumors, the World Health Organization says it does not recommend against the use of ibuprofen to treat COVID-19 symptoms though medical experts say that until more research is conducted its better to start with acetominophen for pain and fever reduction.
