Trump admin. wants US troops near Canadian border, cites coronavirus pandemic; Canada appalled
The Trump administration wants to station U.S. troops near the U.S.-Canada border, as a resource to help apprehend those crossing the border illegally during the novel coronavirus pandemic, Global TV in Canada reported Thursday..
The world's longest undefended border has been closed to recreational, tourism and non-essential travel for the past week, a measure initially sought by the British Columbia government as it watched the coronavirus grow and kill in Washington state. The border remains open to commercial traffic and trade.
Top Canadian officials confirmed the report, and argued that militarization of the border is a very bad idea.
"Canada and the United States have the longest unmilitarized border in the world and it is very much in both of our interests for it to remain that way," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a morning address to the nation. Pressed for specifics on what the Trump administration wants to do, Trudeau would say only: "We have been in discussions on this."
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland was more blunt at a later news conference.
"Canada is strongly opposed to that U.S. proposal and we've made that very clear to our U.S. counterparts," Freeland said.
