Nearly 300 people in Iran have been killed after drinking a toxic chemical in the mistaken belief that it would save them from the coronavirus, according to local reports from the country. The Associated Press reports that thousands of Iranians have been chugging toxic methanol—an industrial alcohol—on the completely false basis that it protects people against the virus. News of the fake cure has reportedly spread like wildfire across social media in Iran, and people are deeply suspicious of official government advice not to drink methanol because it downplayed the virus crisis for days before it overwhelmed the country. Iranian media report nearly 300 people have been killed and more than 1,000 sickened by drinking methanol, and AP reported one case of a 5-year-old boy who was blinded after his parents gave him the poison. As of now, there is no known cure for COVID-19.

Ethanol, 190 poof, denatured with 5% methanol.
Some clever mob connected chemists distilled out the methanol. Some less clever ones did a rotten job of distilling.
So, the end product ranged from "not so wise to drink" to "dead tomorrow".
Industry uses much less 3A because of the methanol that would end up in consumer products. Replaced mostly by SDA 40B.

This is fear and ignorance, which abound in all places. There is no cure, no treatment beyond palliative care. No one can be certain their loved ones or themselves will not be struck down, and this is a terrible strain on the mind and spirit.

There was some Republican county commissioner or something down in Florida who, on learning temperatures above 136 degrees fahrenheit killed the virus, was seriously recommending people point a hairdryer at their nostril and let 'er rip. I am sure more outre suggestions have and will emerge, and that people in desperate fear will actually follow them
