We might want to factor in the projections of extreme self-loathing and a potential death wish from those who are miserable and sick of it all because they try hard to buy into the American Dream that is long gone and are unable to adjust, adapt or, more importantly avoid the consequences of being gullible and superficial about everything.

Just being a good consumer will never cut it or make a full life, methinks. Consuming based on reactionary, feel good stimulus. Oh, that works well if you are a hedonistic nihilist and, unfortunately, many of the people I am referring to may not even know or understand what that means.
