This is a visualization of the movement of a set of people who were present on one beach in Ft. Lauderdale during spring break. The visualization shows where each person went after spring break was over. The result is startling and frightening to say the least.
This visualization was created by Tectonix, which specializes in visualization of massive data sets; data was collected by location technology company X-Mode. The visualization was created by accessing location data for thousands of cell-phones over the month of March and using special geo-spatial big-data analysis software. The data was anonymized to hide user identification. For those who are alarmed by privacy concerns, keep in mind that our location data is available minute-by-minute to cell-phone companies, whether we like or not. (And they also have access to the searches we make, the sites we visit and the texts we write).
Below is the final scary result of the visualization. This is where the revelers went, scattered mostly across the eastern half of the country, some further west. And those are not just blue states. We can only imagine how many of the revelers got infected among the crowds on the beaches, passed it on to hotel-mates, restaurant and hotel staff, airline passengers, and finally to folks in their hometowns. This is like exploding a massive bomb with incendiary shrapnel falling 100s of miles away.

A March 5 party in tony Westport, Connecticut, became a flash point for the spread of coronavirus, the New York Times reported on Monday. About 50 guests, more than half of whom are now infected, attended a 40th birthday celebration that the paper called party zero. There were no known cases of the virus that day in Westport, but as of Monday, the 28,000-person town has 85.
The party may be an example of the kind of thing we call a super-spreading event, epidemiologist William Hanage told the Times, given that attendees later went to other large gatherings in the New York metropolitan area.
The story also recounts the finger-pointing and anxious sleuthing that followed in the town, as well as how quickly private testing became available for its well-heeled residents. A 15-minute drive away, as BuzzFeeds Anne Helen Petersen pointed out on Twitter, the Darien Times reported on Friday that the similarly wealthy Fairfield County town canceled drive-through testing that would have been available to both Darien residents and out-of-towners, noting complaints about the sites proximity to neighboring homes. (The testing site was eventually moved to the local public high school, according to the paper.)
On Friday, Bloomberg reported on how rich and connected Americans were able to fast-track coronavirus testing even if they didnt show symptoms. The 1% can pull strings, medical ethicist Arthur Caplan told the outlet, while millions havent been able to get testing. Its wrong, but its true, he said.
