(95,247 posts)Is a fairly common practice. In this illness, I would suspect that the slowing of metabolism makes it easier to keep proper levels of oxygenation with damaged lungs. Not that I have a medical degree in my other pair of pants, mind, but I have been in intensive care wards where I know the practice was carried out. Bringing the person back out of the induced coma is tricky on occasion, the procedure is far from risk-free.
