I'm often wanting to tell people about something I saw here, but I get hung up on what to call it. Web site? Message board? Bulletin board? ???? ????? What's the right term?

(2,193 posts)Online discussion board, to be precise.
Online community, sort of, with all the various groups and interests, it's really a community.
But I think Discussion Board comes closest to the term understood by the general population.

(17,434 posts)DU Mission Statement: Democratic Underground is an online community where politically liberal people can do their part to effect political and social change by:
* Interacting with friendly, like-minded people;
* Sharing news and information, free from the corporate media filter;
* Participating in lively, thought-provoking discussions;
* Helping elect more Democrats to political office at all levels of American government; and
* Having fun!
After more than a decade online, Democratic Underground still hosts the most active liberal discussion board on the Internet. We are an independent website funded by member subscriptions and advertising, and we have no affiliation with the Democratic Party. Democratic Underground is a truly grassroots community where regular members drive the discussion and set the standards. There is no other website quite like it anywhere on the Internet.

(612 posts)We are, I suppose, best classified as a Democratic "political forum", but I find that the sense of camaraderie here is like no other.
We can indeed be just like a bunch of squabbling two-year-olds sometimes, but then we can still turn to each other when we bear terrible loss, have great news to share, need a recipe, want to know how to grow heirloom tomatoes (or cannabis, in another spot), and so on and so on. One can always find someone here to talk to about damn near anything. Sometimes all we need is a virtual hug, and to know someone's there to listen - or knock you upside the head, if that's what's required.
Add to that some of the most amazing political minds and some of the most wonderful writers ever (some incognito, some not), and you will find such diverse and intelligent discourse at DU; this place is pretty educational, too.
Whew! Hadn't thought I'd go quite so far with this, but it just kinda' kept spillin' out! Plugging the leak now...
Take care; I care.

(10,053 posts)To mash up dictionary words and those from my heart: It is more than just a place with folks that have characteristics in common, there really is a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
