I just completed the form. There is a question of race, and also a question of origin. I put white/American. I think the framing is just as racist as traitor wanted it to be.
f them all.

(16,953 posts)It doesn't need to be counted in the Census.

(81,858 posts)It asks about race. If you pick White, Black, American Indian, you can then also fill in ethnicity. It doesn't actually say anything on the box, but it provides examples (German, Irish, Jamaican, Haitian, Aztec, Navajo Nation, etc.). You can also choose "other Asian" or other.

You can put anything you want in the box.
I took it further and put down every country my ancestors were from. The census is for posterity, but was pretty lame, imo. They asked very few relevant questions compared to previous censuses.

(360 posts)We need to know about the demographics in detail for a variety of reasons.
The census bureau explains it as "Local, state, tribal, and federal agencies use data about race to plan and fund government programs and evaluate other government programs and policies to ensure they fairly and equitably serve the needs of all populations."
I wish they had more choices under the gender question. Currently, non-binary people are not counted and thus a need for programs designed for them is sorely lacking.

(36,851 posts)Local, state, tribal, and federal programs use these data, and they are critical factors in the basic research behind numerous policies, particularly for civil rights. Race data are used in planning and funding government programs that provide funds or services for specific groups.
These data are also used to evaluate government programs and policies to ensure that they fairly and equitably serve the needs of all racial groups and to monitor compliance with antidiscrimination laws, regulations, and policies.
The U.S. Census Bureau collects racial data in accordance with the 1997 Office of Management and Budget standards on race and ethnicity. The data on race are based on self-identification and the categories on the form generally reflect a social definition of race. The categories are not an attempt to define race biologically, anthropologically, or genetically. Respondents can mark more than one race on the form to indicate their racial mixture.
