The methods of transmission we had previously been informed about were:
1) Contact with object that has virus on it
2) Inhaling droplets emitted by sneezes or coughs
The potential 3rd method of transmission is during conversations, especially if the person is speaking loudly

Wow. Adequate social distancing is really needed. The remote TV broadcasts where folks are isolated at home need to remain in place until this thing passes.

(57,073 posts)Several choirs have had mass infections.
When we exhale while shedding virus, it is to be expected in my nonmedical opinion.

(49,990 posts)How easy is it to be infected with COVID-19?
Based on a recent outbreak at a Mount Vernon choir practice, easier than health officials first believed.
What we learned from this outbreak is that this in certain situation, this virus is much more transmissible than we thought possible, said Dr. Howard Liebrand, Skagit County health officer.
About 20 days after a March 10 choir rehearsal, two of the singers have died from the virus and 45 of the remaining 60 in attendance have shown signs of COVID-19.

(14,076 posts)People often spit when talking loudly. For instance, watch a video of the old Chris Matthews show.

(36,745 posts)They will prevent an infected person from transmitting those droplets while talking.
That is the actual forte of a surgical mask. To prevent you from infecting others, not the other way around.

(3,567 posts)Would be best but they dont exist in the numbers needed.
It is interesting that an Italian hospital stoped all infections in medical personnel. The gowns and masks were more advanced and all patient access and procedures very were tightly controlled.

(25,979 posts)was that none of the people were moving, which is unusual for those standing around talking that long. I'd love to see how long droplets hang in the air and where/how quickly they move depending on how people move around, for instance in a grocery store aisle. Maybe then my relatives would stay home.
"But I only went out to the store and back a couple of times this week! Otherwise, I haven't been anywhere!"
I know not everyone can do it, but these are people who definitely can have their groceries delivered and they just will not, because they have to get out of the house on occasion dontchaknow. Don't even get me started on trying to convince them that they need to wipe down, wash and/or timeout everything that comes in from the store (or the mailbox) because *points up* of this kind of thing.
They think I'm overreacting.

(51,591 posts)where some who were infected had been for a short period of time. They said the virus is in the air they exhale while normal breathing. You don't have to be close to those infected and they don't have to cough right near you. They have it in their exhaled air and it lingers in the air for a while. I heard this discovery a week ago on cable news.
I have rarely gone out but whenever I have for the past month I have worn a used mask and gloves (I reuse them and rotate them...4 can last 4 months if I keep self isolating). I figure the germ can't live more than 2-3 weeks on a mask or gloves so after that much time I can use them again (I keep them outside my home or in a sealed baggie). The passage of time is nature's sterilizer. I wash my hands before and after I use them.

(51,591 posts)before but only once did I hear that it was in the air from regular breathing (on MSNBC or CNN). They said that means it is much smaller than cough droplets. I am still going to wear my mask if I have to risk going out even if it doesn't keep all the germs out. I do not trust anyone's info these days, especially our govt's and it is a good thing since they keep changing what they recommend.

(19,858 posts)now say we should wear a mask when out. Three weeks ago, they were telling us to not use a mask if we didn't have symptoms.

(7,415 posts)what happens to their breath in cold weather. Those are clouds of condensing water vapor, folks. Just like breathing on your eyeglasses before you wipe them clean.
We have friends who host an annual Christmas party wherein their average ranch-style home is packed with anywhere from 30 60 folks for a couple of hours. Like clockwork, they sing carols toward the end of the evening insisting on everyone taking part. After the first time I came down sick in the week afterward, it was obvious to me what happened. A house full of people, all inhaling deeply then expelling all the air in their lungs before taking another deep breath, over and over for a half hour or so?
I told my wife that from that point forward we could no longer stay for the singing. It was too risky for me.
