Florida in 48 hours: DeSantis has blood on his hands

With piss poor testing protocols, over the last 48 hours our state has seen a

31.1% increase in confirmed diagnoses
35.4% increase in hospitalizations
41.6% increase in deaths

We have had 7 deaths reported in the last six hours.

Still no state-wide stay at home or lock down orders.

48 fucking hours

Confirmed cases doubled in three-days.

Three days.

Just do what you can. There's probably enough community consciousness about the virus that you can travel in narrow paths to stay within safer parameters than in other places. Best of luck.

My county is governed largely by tea party assholes. So we have no municipal, county, or state issued stay at home orders that cover our area.

I have a pregnant employee whose OB issued a quarantine advisory to her and her entire household two weeks ago. My company immediately authorized telework (actually, I had been advocating she do that for more than a week prior to that).

Her husband's company, even with the doctor's note, is refusing to authorize him to work from home.

And to make this even more heinously evil, he has a job that can not only be done effectively from home, but when he travels for work he is required to do his job remotely while on the road. But apparently doing it remotely when he is not on business travel is forbidden.

And to top it off, they are still having some of their employees travel domestically and come right back into the office upon their return.

Thank goodness for the Families First Coronavirus Recovery Act (FFCRA) going into effect tomorrow. Hopefully he can leverage it to apply pressure to his employer even though the Act does not compel employers to authorize telework when it is feasible. That's a key weakness in the legislation by the way.

I'm so disgusted and frustrated on her behalf.

I cannot tell you how many people I know who plan to immediately initiate a job search when all of this is over because of how their employer responded to this crisis. Unresponsive dispassionate irrational employers are going to pay the price down the road with a horrific employee value brand.

I've already had a couple friends share that their entire household was infected by way of the ex insisting on having the kids on the regular schedule, and then going to work.

If one parent can WFH, they should have temporary extended custody. This is, after all, a fucking emergency.

But if you do it yourself, it might be the case that some co- workers n friends/associates get the message, and do the same.

have seen doubling time around 3 days early in their outbreaks. That's around 26% increase per day. Sometimes I've seen daily increases well into the 30's. A two-day doubling time would be 41% increase per day.

And 10-fold increase should take 3.3x the doubling time. So a 2-day doubling time means tenfold increase in about a week.

It's wildly irresponsible to be intensely aware that huge swaths of Florida's population are in the vulnerable age range, and do nothing to protect them.

This should guarantee that DeSantis will be rubbed out at the next election.

My folks live in The Villages.

I speak with them about every other evening. My mother works for the Hospice network in Florida; so she travels quite a bit.

The main gathering areas in TV have been closed off to the public; however the golf carts line up; they pop open their chairs and commune in large groups all day long. The golf courses & clubhouses remain open. The clubhouses that have shuttered to the public; the gentlemen simply gather in the parking lot and socialize and imbibe.

My father; trying to limit his exposure to the outside gathering groceries says Publix; WalMart; Target all have crowds like any other day. Couples shopping together; grandparents with their grandkids; etc.

They just aren’t taking it seriously. The government nor the general public.

Florida is in for big trouble. Soon.

Be safe out there...

Tue Mar 31, 2020, 08:22 PM
Mar 2020

You are no different than Louisiana, you're just about a week behind us. You can double both the new cases and deaths every three days until effective countermeasures are taken. But the countermeasures won't take effect for two to three weeks on new cases, so whatever you case load is when you finally get your lock down, the curve won't start to flatten until you have at least ten times that many. And deaths lag by another 2-3 weeks, so they won't slow down for over a month.

Other than countermeasures like quarantine and social distancing, the only thing that stops the doubling is saturation of the population. In 1918 about 25% of the population got the flu, but that was a less mobile world and a disease that was fundamentally not as aggressively contagious.

Down here in the lower counties of Broward and Miami-Dade most of our cities are on lockdown sheltering in place during the day and on curfew at night, while up the map in other parts of FL they are still out and about. THere is no uniformity of safety standards and DeSantis won't put his foot down.
