(9,313 posts)... and do NOT abandon it prematurely, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at University of Washington is projecting about 84,000 (range about 37,000 to 150,000) for the first wave.
Perhaps we do have a shot at keeping numbers under 100,000.
The site doesn't have any "overall" projection -- nothing on second wave. I think there are just too many unknowns. Their focus is projecting needed hospital resources and shortages that must be addressed NOW (even with social distancing).

(9,313 posts)A dear friend's elderly mother lives there. When the governor defined just about every business as "essential," I was appalled. I think they've narrowed that now, but the state of their health care system is appalling. An op ed a while back by a former Republican congressman painted an incredibly scary picture. They were overwhelmed by an uptick in seasonal flu. They are utterly unprepared for this.
I'm sure they are not the only ones, and it breaks my heart.

(6,110 posts)You would think FEMA would have 10,000 in storage. And each hospital would have dozens in house.
Those ventilators are game changers for serious pneumonia cases. I have seen that first hand. My wife had pneumonia in both lungs, was in coma in ICU for a 5 days with the ventilator going 24-7. She survived because of the ventilator.

(6,110 posts)I moved to Florida not because it is a purple/red state, but because I now prefer warm weather.
And I love the beach life. Seattle area was too cold and wet in winters but very pretty in summers.

(9,313 posts)It is such a simple -- even logical sounding -- lie.
I saved you. It would have been FAR worse.
The truth is much more complex. His dismantling of the infrastructure that was in place, CDC delays creating "it's own test" when one was already available Jan 13, delay in declaring a public health emergency to enable preparation, when test finally available, distribute without quality control (recipients were the ones who discovered the problems), idiots at the FDA not using their emergency use authority to give labs across the country the go ahead to distribute and process their own tests (or the test available on 1/13) the instant the public health emergency was declared, on and on.
The truth is the virus was already here, circulating, for weeks, undetected. The travel ban was doomed. Not only was the virus already here, the ban was implemented so badly the "screening" they did was useless. Unfortunatey, we can not definitely prove how far it was allowed to circulate because there was no testing. A catch 22. Obstruction of testing allows uncontrolled spread -- uncontrolled spread "unprovable" due to obstruction of testing.
The truth is harder to get across. Too many people are too busy just figuring out how to get by in this to pay attention to details. The simple lie beats the complex truth. And it is showing in the polls. NY Times Who Are the Voters Behind Trumps Higher Approval Rating? (March 31)
While Republicans views of Mr. Trump were flat a sign they had already topped out approval by independents rose by eight percentage points from early March, while Democratic approval was up by six percentage points.
Polling experts said that it was normal for the country to rally around a president during a national crisis, and that Mr. Trumps dominance of the airwaves alone was enough to sway a slice of voters who dont normally tune in to politics.
There are people who havent even heard Trump that much, while the rest of us have been obsessed, said Matt Grossmann, director of the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research at Michigan State University. Those people are paying attention and seeing Trump a lot.

(4,858 posts)...I'm almost 67. I have high blood pressure, for which I take no meds. I was cut off Medicaid when I turned 65, and live on SSI. Medicare premiums would take up almost my whole monthly income, so I have no health care right now. I've made the decision that if I get so ill that I'm afraid for my life, I'm just going to pass without a fuss, rather than using up scarce resources and getting into a debt that I'll never be able to even begin to repay. Of course, whether this resolution can withstand gasping for breath, agony, and the panic that will bring, is another question. I hope so...but this all adds an extra dimension to the fear I'm feeling...
