So MIL claims tons of people from NY going to FL

and that is why her governor wanted NY "locked in." --And blames Cuomo for the spread of corona (this is my MAGA MIL). BTW FL and RI and that bill that compensates us less than every other state in the union when we bear the greatest burden.... Believe me, all those people (including Congress) from other states who "stood with NY" on 9/11--you have my side-eye.

wherever you aren't presumably, but it just caught my side-eye. Say no to your MIL's disease.

We're all in this together, but we're not all equally affected. The people bearing the greatest burden are not those sheltering in NYC or Panama Beach but those who die -- let's not forget the enormous suffering that precedes death either -- and the far greater numbers those whose lives are greatly adversely impacted now and will be most devastated by what will be many months of hits.

Those include both people who start with few resources and those whose situations mean special problems. Any time we feel victimized, we might wonder what's happening to children and other helpless people locked up with cruel relatives you wouldn't trust a puppy with for an afternoon.

People right here are attacking Florida, where I am now, as if Floridians came from around the nation carrying disease, spread it all around Florida communities, including death to we don't know how many yet, and then left and spread it around the nation, including to families they'd never met and never will.

Big whatever for meanspirited and dishonest people who discard thinking because it gets in the way of indulging what shouldn't be.

I mean, it gets SO Hot!

And the infrastructure... there are like 2 big highways out of there. We see them backed up on the news every year a hurricane is coming.
And hurricane season starts in 2 months. But tornado season is now.

And most all the beaches are closed.

The really wealthy people have already skedaddled weeks ago.

My friend's daughter lives in the Bronx. She is in quarantine now. She can't come home to her parents. Plus, her sister is at "home" and has a risky health condition.

They don't call them "Snowbirds" for nothing.

The populations of South Florida, West Palm Beach, Marco Island, Naples and many other Florida communities drops off dramatically this time of year as the snowbirds head back north. Most of them own condos or homes or even permanent RV spots down here and are free to come back and stay as they see fit.

I am willing to bet that is exactly how Covid19 spread to all the states along the route, many of which are largely rural like NC where I now live after moving from NJ a few years ago. With I-95 being virtually the only highway between NY and Fla, the many rest stops along the way are always crowded with hundreds of people at every hour of the day and the long drive makes it mandatory that stops be made at many of them, together with overnight stays at local motels. I-95 is the perfect breeding ground.

It is silly to blame a segment of the population that does what it has done on a seasonal basis for decades for the spread of this virus.

Plenty of snowbirds fly back and forth as well. I know because I was in the car haul business and worked for several firms over the years that specialized in moving their cars. It might surprise you how many of them own their own planes as well, and I'm not talking necessarily jets, but simple, single engine aircraft like Cessna's, Beechcraft, Piper and others.

They fly down and have their automobiles brought by truck.

There are certain weeks of the year where the number of "POV's" (Privately Owned Vehicles, in car haul parlance) crossing the state line exceeds 10,000 every 7 days, or roughly 1250 open rack car haulers full a week.

It's just a fact. Anyone who has ever made the trip along I-95 knows that the roads are always packed with cars from the north going south and visa versa. If you could pause that traffic it might stop the spread of the virus along the way.

All they would end up doing is spreading more cases in places where there have previously been less cases.

They call it "shelter in place" for a reason.

Liberals and Jews. NY has tons of them, and many have winter homes in FL, or have retired there.

What I don't understand is WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM once they retire to FL? Many seem to drink the koolaide and start voting SOLELY for selfish financial gain purposes.

FL should be solidly blue, BECAUSE of them.

But the same thing happened to many "hippies" of my generation... Once they got to where they didn't have anything to worry about financially, they shat on every ideal they used to support.

De Santis is deliberately stirring up hostility against New Yorkers to divert the focus away from his own shitty response. Among some of the population, it's working. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if some fine Republican resident of Florida decides to shoot a New Yorker, and then tries to claim it was self-defense.

Commenting on the situation? It’s a discussion board.

I have no animus against any state. Good and bad people in all of them.

Perhaps I did a poor job communicating my meaning. Which was don’t worry about it. It human nature to pick fun at others. I don’t let it bother me. I apologize if my post came off meaning anything else.

As far as the republicans trying to find scapegoats, that shit is about to crash and burn. Because soon South and Central Florida are going to look like NYC with a governor who waited a month too long to take decisive action.

Have a good evening. Ours is kind of a bummer. Found out my wife gets furloughed in 2 weeks.

But we will make it.

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are all shutting down because of the coronavirus.

But in Palm Beach County, the telephones of real estate agents are lighting up with residents from the Northeast eager to come here or stay here.

Some want to extend their seasonal rentals to avoid having to return to the North, back to the crowds and the burgeoning sickness. Others who are from the Northeast want to buy in Palm Beach County. Fast.

“I just had somebody who walked into the office in a panic. He wanted to buy a place here,” said Jeff Lichtenstein of Echo Fine Properties in Palm Beach Gardens. “He wants to be out of New York City.”
...
As a result, there’s a clamor from Empire State residents who want to escape from New York, a demand creating waves in the Palm Beach County real estate market. One of them is the doctor who walked into Lichtenstein’s office.

Agents say people who rented seasonally through March are looking to stay here through April and beyond, especially since flying has been discouraged by federal health officials.

But some of the places where visitors are staying have been rented to other guests in April. People who rented in spring and summer include those seeking to relocate, or people who lined up rentals due to a divorce or home renovation, said Will Dean, a real estate agent at Echo Fine Properties.

As a result, “We’re all getting called like crazy from people who want to rent,” said Burt Minkoff, a real estate agent with Douglas Elliman on Palm Beach.

Sat Apr 4, 2020, 04:24 PM
Apr 2020

there are traveling advisories and stay in place orders going on. That said, I think that is an article designed to rile people up and provides only a anecdotal account and no actual statistical evidence.

NY, NJ, and CT all put in serious social distancing, shutting down non-essential businesses etc. to decrease the spread of the virus. They worked together because the metro area is part of all those states although I don't know why PA didn't join in because they are also just as vulnerable. Additionally, COVID is all over the country. The first case was in Washington State. Hardly originating in the Big Apple.

FL has a lot of tourist areas that were thriving thru Jan, Feb and most of March. I've been there-- Disneyworld etc. full of tourists from all over the place. They also hosted Spring Break and kept beaches, hotels, and clubs open for partiers. I don't know why the governor there was not more cautious but he just wasn't. I don't appreciate him blaming NY.

There are people who retire to Florida from everywhere in the country. Yes, historically there have been many NYers-- who are snowbirds etc. that bring a lot of $ to the Florida economy every winter. Even my grandparents had a condo in Stewart years ago when they were alive and they would fly down there after Christmas and then come back in March. Eventually they became so frail, they didn't go back to Florida. However, it is not fair for their governor, and the people that live there to point the finger at NY or Gov. Cuomo.

One of our very gifted doctors had plans to retire and move to Florida in April and open a cardiac catheterization clinic there. I guess he won't be doing that this month.

Neither trump or republicans caused this. It would be bad even with a Democratic President and governor. But because of them it is turning into an unmitigated, unmanageable nightmare!

My sister lived in KY for gods sake. Her governor locked things almost a month ago and is now loved by the people. DeShitus was more worried about not making trump mad. Now he is going down in flames. And taking 10’s of thousands of unnecessary deaths with him.
