But even people that are claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return can file a return themselves -- they just mark the box that says they are claimed as a dependent of someone else on their tax return.

He would file a return and owe nothing but you’d check a box somewhere that he’s claimed as a dependent on another return.

Looks like I have to file even though I already have a DD acct with the Treasury. Guess I'll get on it right away.

One part is proving income eligibility. That's why the IRS is asking for returns. Dems say this is stupid and I agree. The other part is actually getting the money.

I will send links to two threads in a minute, but please understand none of this is clear at this point.

I have a 26 year old daughter who is doing graduate studies. She had less than $1500 in wages in 2019 and did not file a separate tax return but I claimed her as a dependent on mine. I have not found any information yet that she would be entitled to the $1200 payment. Do you have a link for the info that folks in this situation simply need to file a tax return? That should be fairly simple to do. There is a question on the tax return re whether you can be claimed on someone's else's return.

Social Security recipients, our vulnerable seniors, and people with disabilities MUST be able to get the critical direct cash assistance from our new coronavirus response bill without having to file tax returns.

The stimulus law expressly says if you are claimed as a dependent on another return you don’t qualify

If you are ss and you are paying your own way you qualify
As a dependent you have someone else paying the majority of your expenses so you don’t “need” the stimulus.
You can file the return as them claiming themselves but as soon as you do it will reject at IRS and you will have to change it to being claimed.
Once you do that IRS will not put them on the stimulus role.
I wish it was different but that’s the way that provision of the CARES act reads.

Because the thing you say it's the "opposite" of is vague.

IIRC, if you were 17 and a dependent there'd be $500 heading to the economic unit you were dependent on for you.

If you were 18 or older and a dependent, no.

So if he's elderly, age > 18, but a dependent, then no.

That could be wrong, but I think that's how it broke.

Dependents are more than able to file tax returns if they have income over $3k or paid some sort of tax that they can get returned. I have lots of students, 16 and 17 and 18, who do this. Heck, I did this back in the '70s.

Too many different "opinions" to take a chance.
SS is our only income and we're barely making it.

Is to not claim them on 2020 return.
This is an advancement on a 2020 credit.

If it’s a refundable credit he can claim it by filing on his own next year.

Go go along with the whole thing until the end.

STOP.

Do not submit it via efile.

If you do it takes you to file for the state, etc. etc.

Easiest thing to do is this:

Print it out, sign and date it (either single or joint) and mail it to your IRS. Keep a copy of the signed form for yourself as proof that you filed.

Google your location to find out where to mail it to as far as the IRS goes.

If you file and are on SS you'll get the $1200.00 or $2400.00 this way!

printed and mailed it in almost two weeks ago...I make too little on SS to pay anything or get a refund. I did sign up online for an IRS account where you can view current and past transcripts of your filing, just so I could know if they have processed
anything from the 2019 filing yet...nothing there. I hope they can use my SS direct deposit information because I haven't received a refund for several years so the IRS doesn't have my dd info (other than through SS).

One interesting thing about my state filing. I am in a thuglican controlled red state (except for the governor), Kansas and they
instituted a sales tax credit (we have a high sales tax, even on food) with my low income my credit was $125 for 2019 but I googled and discovered the last worthless republican governor (Sam (shit for brains) Brownback) had signed a law before he was thrown out that the sales tax credit isn't really a credit at all for low income persons, it only applies if you owe taxes...
big help for people like me with poverty level fixed income...

I file just to CYA in case some one were to ask, I have the proof.

Its shameful to file a return with an adjusted gross income of ~$1500/yr.

Shameful.

I do not get a thing back either.

In this case, I'm glad I filed.

Last year I printed them out and did in by hand and mailed it in so I do have 2018 as well.

Seems like a lot to go through when you make so very little!

Go on the IRS website and if you don’t see something about this particular issue or call them. They’re not as busy now that the tax deadline is June 15. I think Wednesday is one of the days they tell you to call when they’re busy.

"The distribution of economic impact payments will begin in the next three weeks and will be distributed automatically, with no action required for most people. However, some seniors and others who typically do not file returns will need to submit a simple tax return to receive the stimulus payment. Please do not call the IRS about this. When more specific details become available, we will update this page."

SOME SENIORS.

But if you receive SS and if you receive a yearly statement of your benefits, called a Social Security Benefit Statement, we are told you are already in the system and do not need to file a tax return if you do not normally need to do so.
