(26,025 posts)He'll have herd immunity if he pulls through. Bet he never figured he'd be part of the herd, however.

(182,987 posts)I hear it slip in here and there but I haven't heard anything definite. Maybe I missed it.

(40,244 posts)I suppose we will be finding out more soon about Mr. Johnson's condition.
I also believe that I heard, on either CNN or MSNBC, that 10 days in is often a very precarious time in the disease's process when people take turns for the worst.

(386 posts)i.e. acute respiratory distress syndrome, they may try positive air pressure on you short of the highly invasive lung tube. A BiPAP or CPAP or APAP machine. The PAP air tube goes to a face mask, or it can even go to a tracheotomy hole.
But if you can make it on just PAP you really want that. You get to stay awake.
Lung intubation is brutal. They put and usually keep you under for it. And even of those who survive being on vents, many have a very hard recovery afterwards.
In short, most covid patients who go to ICUs do wind up on vents. But not all.

(108,385 posts)Why can't it be Trump instead?
Rorey
(8,445 posts)That's the only explanation that makes sense.
He continued to shake hands, touch his face, etc. And then let's not forget that he stared at the sun during an eclipse.
Yup, he's Satan. Only explanation.

(27,223 posts)because he was an ardent critic of George W. Bush and the Iraq War.
I admit, I was one of those who praised him.
But, once he became a mini-me of Trump, of course, I quickly changed my opinion of him.
I didn't realize his criticism of Bush didn't equal good values about other things.
I just thought DU should be reminded that he wasn't always a bad guy around here.

(34,857 posts)He went off the deep end with Brexit, tho.

(27,848 posts)People might have aligned with him on a couple of issues, but I really don't recall much praise for him.

(386 posts)...from what few numbers I have seen, my impression is that if an ICU is getting 50% survival at that stage, that's good.
A 1 in 3 chance may be more common.
Maybe the odds of being "successfully extubated" are better than that. I hope so. We'll hear what it's been eventually. Just not right now.
blitzen
(4,572 posts)but maybe higher for him with especially attentive care, per me.
SuprstitionAintthWay
(386 posts)They're different things. Some covid patients do recover in ICUs without having to be intubated.

(7,638 posts)Boris Johnson was on the wrong side of history pushing for Brexit but he is nowhere near Trump level of evil and certainly not stupid.

(25,925 posts)he was moved to intensive care as a precaution, in case he does need to be ventilated.
This is the man who has been willfully destroying the EU and Great Britain the last several years. I find it hard to work up any sympathy for him.
