Mayor Duggan announces $800 extra hazard pay for Detroit employees working on frontlines

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced hazard pay for city employees that are working on the frontlines during the COVID-19 crisis.

Starting Monday, employees will be receiving an additional $800 in pay.

Some employees will get an extra $5 an hour for every hour they work. Since firefighters work in shifts, they will receive an extra $90 per shift.

The hazard pay will apply to dispatchers and call takers, as well,

Duggan said it will apply to workers like police, fire and DDOT, along with other city departments like water, health and building safety.

"I intend to leave this order in place as long as the emergency is here," Duggan said.

I don't like it (after the fact) being called "hazard pay". These are jobs that people already had and are "fortunate" to still be working... they should be getting the money though (whatever it is called)…

but, so should anyone still out there working ...if people let off from work are going to get an extra $600 unemployment, why shouldn't people still working get the 'bonus' 'hazard pay' 'stimulus' etc... whatever it needs to be called (gas station attendants, grocery store workers, clerks, etc.)

bottom line is shouldn't we just generally get more money for what we do in society? there is so much that is so wrong, so inequitable, so distorted... time for real soul searching as a Nation, as a people
