His supporters need the postal service as much as anyone.
My Dad once told my mother Stop yelling and let the boy play in the street, hell learn his lesson after the car runs over him
Some people just have to feel the pain before they understand the reason not to do something. Perhaps then they will realize how fucking stupid they were to ever like him to begin with.

FedEx and UPS don't do most rural and suburban deliveries, it's contracted that the USPS performs final segment delivery, making only 1 cent per package. This way FedEx and UPS get to privatize profits and socialize expenses.
Without USPS, those other two will be boned, and they don't have the infrastructure for rural/suburban deliveries.

(6,084 posts)Would make more sense for the postal workers to go on strike right now and stay out until the subsidy is in place. Even then there'd be no guarantee Trump wouldn't pull a Reagan and fire them all.

(3,404 posts)But the postal service is authorized by the constitution and regulated by congress. Nancy is still in charge there.
Trump has no authority here and Congress has the power of the purse.

Trump is capable of anything. Refusing to sign any bill with the USPS subsidy in it is right up his alley.

My mom also worked at the post office and was a diehard dem. Maybe where one lives was more of an influence on their views?

(3,145 posts)But so do elderly and non-computer savvy folks in the cities. My grandmother dutifully wrote a check every month for the bills and put them in an envelope and mailed them off. She was so technologically challenged that she was stumped by an old Nokia cell phone, I couldn't even imagine trying to show her how to do online bill pay.
Loss of the Postal Service will hurt lots of people so no.

(11,949 posts)Were they on the ascendant they might get away with it. Not now.
And his rural base depends on them. As do most Americans.
And there is that little thing called the constitution. A postal service is mandated.
Nancy should have the house vote on a vigorous Saving Postal Service Act and send it to the Senate. Then sit back and wait. It will pass and be signed.

It would cause over a half million Americans, and their families, a lot of pain,
and there would likely be bloodshed. Seriously.

(14,494 posts)and so do millions of other low income people. In addition, millions of desperately needed charities would fail without mail-in contributions.
Save your breath with the pay-it-online mantra. If we go into a severe recession or depression, many will no longer afford access to the internet, causing more public pain. Forcing people to travel out to pay crucial bills will further spread COVID-19.
Call you representatives and senators and insist the USPS be fully funded, including an extra boost to compensate for added danger during a health crisis and loss of revenue from delivering advertising materials.
We do not need stupid retrograde measures during a global pandemic......

New York and Philadelphia post offices went on strike around 1969??. Pay was bad until then. Nixon said you can't strike and if you do I'll use the National Guard to deliver the mail. New York and Philly said, Hold Our Beer. Nixon found out the National Guard SUCKED at delivering mail. And came around quick with signing a pay package to get the mail moving nationwide because New York and Philly had a lot of it fucked up. Those were WWII vets then. The postal service is still the largest employer of vets.
Trump might not want to fuck with them when it gets right down to it.
My dad was a letter carrier, that's how I know this basic story. So New York and Philly alone got the entire postal system a pay raise that brought their wages more in line with other segments.
