General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIt costs me $10 a month for access to the Washington Post online.
I know for some people that's still too much of a financial burden, but for plenty of others it shouldn't be too high a price to pay to support their excellent journalism.
I have to admit that complaints about their paywall really bug me, when it costs so little to be able to just click on their links without a fuss.
I love and value my WaPo access and wouldn't be without it.

(16,616 posts)I subscribe to the NYT but the WaPo is doing some things better.
This morning on Twitter I saw someone complaining to Lenny Bernstein that a new story he'd co-authored for the Post (a great article about the virus) shouldn't be behind a paywall, and he responded that it wasn't behind a paywall, but that good journalism costs money. It does.

(43,049 posts)if I ever get broker than I am now, there's always the library.
Howcum our side insists on free stuff all the time while the other side is willing to pay? Could that have something to do with why they win so often?

(10,907 posts)about not subscribing to another dozen publications, no matter how worthy. I also give to many organizations, e.g. more than $100,000 (net after tax breaks) to Population Connection in 2016. So yeah, I get a little peeved about being guilt-tripped about not subscribing to yet more periodicals. I can't do it all, I wish I could, but I can't.

(31,893 posts)I was merely encouraging those who could afford it, to consider subscribing.

(25,976 posts)They have to make money somehow so they charge subscriptions, still they have all of the Covid coverage available free to all. Good on them and the many online papers doing the same.

(2,042 posts)The only thing thats free is their live story updating all the developments as the day progresses. I suppose thats enough but its far short of what the NYT is doing.

(3,816 posts)but I wish there was some king of aggregate company where you could pay a single monthly fee and have access to a package of online papers/sites including at least one or two top tier sites. That would make accessing a wider range of pubs more affordable and keep the cost down to the end user. It can get very expensive tying to keep open multiple subscriptions.

(9,952 posts)I did want to say after I posted, I do not feel the need to state I cannot read the article. I understand I have the option of paying, and I have no problem with newspapers wanting to be paid or others posting an Op from these publication. I read thru comments to see if I can gather some info, otherwise, my loss.

(5,644 posts)and not lose anything. You can get around the paywall that way.
I used to do it for the NYTimes but my wife finally subscribed.
Download a different browser, and surf the WaPo that way.
scarletwoman
(31,893 posts)Such work-arounds are fine for people who really can't afford to pay for a subscription, but if a person actually can afford a subscription, I think it's really a kind of theft.
Obviously, YMMV.

(5,644 posts)I do believe in paying for journalism, though big outlets don't need the money as much as the smaller local ones, of course.

(3,461 posts)After 2016, one of the first things I did was subscribe to both the Washington Post and the NYT.
I'm fortunate to be in a position to do it, and the work they do is critical for our country.
Well worth the price.
(And the same goes for supporting DU.)

(58,785 posts)including a lot of expensive ones I'd never subscribe to, and some provide free links to the full articles that are otherwise blocked.
Between that and the handful of "free access" articles many offer each month, a whole lot of subscription journalism is available. Want to follow a link to The Atlantic but used up your articles for the month? (I do this all the time. We're currently without a subscription, though it's on my gift list.) Google the subject and read about it from the Boston Globe, Washington Monthly, or The Times of Israel. Whatever.

(2,042 posts)But theyve been aggressively stingy with the content they make available during a national crisis relative to the NYT. I find that kind of annoying.
