Senators' plan to reopen economy -- testing 'fast, free and everywhere'
The Trump administration must come up with a national "strategic plan" and test Americans everywhere for the novel coronavirus, before the pandemic-stricken U.S. economy can reopen, the U.S. Senate's Democratic leaders including Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, argued on Wednesday.
"Fast, free and available testing in every community, expanded reporting and a bolstered supply chain" are prerequisites to recovery and keeping the COVID-19 pandemic from returning to a reopened American, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, told a national news conference.
The senators' call came in response to a white paper from Murray. Easy to overlook given the pandemic of press releases from her office, the Washington senator has called for expanded testing since the nation's first COVID-19 case and death -- which were separate cases -- were recorded in this state.
Murray reportedly delivered the call for testing repeatedly during February, a month when the Trump administration spurned test kits -- 1.4 million of them --- offered by the World Health Organization. The administration opted to produce its own test, only for the Center for Disease Control to botch the development and rollout.
