I'm not a fan of Abbott's, it seems like he is running the pilot program that Trump was talking about.
We are Guinea Pigs. Great.
See you on the other side...

(4,139 posts)When cases start to spike.
Does Texas even have a testing and tracing program in place. All the epidemiological experts are saying that, before anything can open back up, widespread testing needs to be available, people who test positive have to be quarantined, and the contacts of people who test positive have to be traced and tested to prevent one case from turning into dozens or hundreds. If Texas isnt planning to do that then this little experiment wont last long and it wont end well.

(25,471 posts)It's not so much that Texans are tough. It's that losses are acceptable to protect the economy. That's always Abbott's first priority.

This is nuts. The good thing is that most Democrats and Republicans I know are unhappy with this dictate.

(2,189 posts)Trump and his asshole sycophant governors have become dangerous to listen to and are clearly not out for the best interests of the people in the least. They are having brainwashed citizens risk their own well being to try and make themselves look good.
That's some really sick dictator-like shit. The real Communists used to do stuff like this.

(2,022 posts)Everyone else will learn from it. And Texas is in much better shape than states like Michigan.
The reality is that we are all going to be living in a world of ongoing infections and deaths over the next couple years - we just need to learn how best to control it in the face of conflicting needs. This goes for the entire world. Until we get a good vaccine, there will always be some risk.
For people who want to go out, if they get infected (and can expect to recover), they will be contributing to herd immunity, which will help others. For those who want to stay in, and are fortunate enough to be able to do so, they can wait it out.
For states opening up, I would like to see regulations on employers to allow working from home whenever possible (if the employee wants to) and providing workplace protection to the extent possible (if the employee wants it). I don't expect this in Texas, but other states might.

(9,981 posts)I dont know whether the governor has the power to overturn the mayors orders. I know that Texas has tested very few people and that cases are increasing every day, so we have not seen a peak.
The problem with online ordering and curbside pickup or delivery is that stores are so overwhelmed with orders that its impossible even to place an order. And if you happen to get in to the system, its three to four weeks before you can pick up your groceries. Im not willing to go without fresh vegetables that long. Im in Austin, and I hope the grocery stores here continue the safety protocol theyve been using. Even if the governor forces other businesses to open, they may not see many customers. I will go only to the grocery until the number of cases is decreasing, not increasing.

(34,195 posts)It happened in S.C. where my brother lives.
Mayors issued stay at home orders, and shut down a lot of nonessential businesses.
The Republican governor said they didn't have the authority and he reversed their orders.

(11,885 posts)Abbott hasn't tested enough to know whats about to happen. 170,000 tests done in a state with just under 29 million. He could infect many more without testing. When it does he'll work to cover it up.

(1,905 posts)Will follow thru with Abbotts wishes. There will be quiet a few who will have a keg party and head on out on their last trip.
As much as they hate their opponents, I say party on, with as many of your friends you can gather up. My wife and I will continue on with the same rules we live by now.

(180 posts)Is it wrong that I assume the worst in these people, and expect to see an increase in corporate owned life insurance policies? You know, maybe just take out a little policy on a special few employees that might have a few underlying health issues.
I try to be positive, and think theres a limit to the depths people will go. Problem is, they traded in the shovels and hired Halliburton to use a deep sea mining drill. They want to see if its possible to cleave the Earth in two.

(1,606 posts)Gaslighting is manipulation intended to confuse at the least, or doubt your own sanity at most.
It is directed particularly toward individuals of higher cognitive functioning, e.g., the ability to analyze, make connections, draw inferences, and--particularly--synthesize information from multiple sources.
We are not crazy. Tthe powers that prevail at this moment seek to confuse and confound us with irrational statements and actions, though. Stay the course. Resist.
